    Tennessee Tech’s English Department presents Hughie at the Playhouse

    TN Tech’s English Department presents the Kurt Eisen Essential Playwright Series Production — Hughie  — by Eugene O’Neill and directed by Joe Clark on February 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19, 20, 2021 at 8:00 p.m.; February 18, at 10:00 p.m.; and, February 20,  at 2:00 p.m. with streaming performances on February 22 and 23.

    Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 senior citizens and $5 for all students.

    Featuring Mark H, Creter as “Erie” Smith, Ryan Steele as a Night Clerk and James Lyle Alder as the Narrator.

    THE STORY:  Hughie is one of Eugene O’Neill’s last works. It was originally intended as part of a series of short plays, but it became the lone survivor when O’Neill destroyed the others. Set in the lobby of a seedy Time Square hotel early one morning, the characters are the hotel’s gray, withdrawn night clerk and “Erie” Smith, a penny-ante gambler who has spent most of his last fifteen years at the hotel between periods of drunkenness.

    Tennessee Tech’s literary magazine The Iris Review is now accepting submissions for the Spring 2021 edition through February 28th. The magazine is open to all TTU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Cookeville community, so feel free to spread the word.

    JDAG Virtual Talk with artist Katie Hudnall

    Start the weekend off right with a virtual discussion on Friday at 4 p.m. with JDAG artist, Katie Hudnall.

    Hudnall received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art & design and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Furniture Design/Woodworking. She has been the recipient of a Virginia Museum of Fine Art Fellowship, the Windgate Wood Residency at the University of Madison, Wisconsin, and Anderson Ranch Residency and most recently a Creative Renewal Fellowship Grant from the Indianapolis Arts Council. She lives and works in Madison, WI, where she is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Wood Program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

    Her work is on display in the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery in the RUC.

    Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Clay

     

    Appalachian Center for Craft is pleased to announce it will be holding the Thesis Exhibition, Beyond the Depths, by Aaron Guinn on November 25 – December 8 in the Joe L. Evins Gallery, Mon-Sat., 10AM – 5PM, Sun. 12PM – 5PM. There you will see his ceramic sculptures of coral made from wheel-thrown, handbuilt, and press molded objects fired with layers of vibrant glazes. Like the growing signs of climate change, our coral reefs show loss of coloration and growth due to pollution of harmful non-biodegradable objects and hazardous materials that severely inhibit wildlife. The exhibition’s importance is to showcase nature’s beauty of natural, organic formations and the effects of pollution on our environments by taking more steps in protecting it.

    Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting

    Sometimes people can be funnier than the joke. It seems that you stumble across the weirdest looking person telling a joke and you end up laughing at them rather than the punch line. That is what Cameron Adcock’s latest exhibition, “Simply Southern”, is all about. The exhibit will be located at the Bryan Fine Arts building on the TTU campus on Nov. 30 thru Dec. 11, 8 am thru 10 pm. If you like all things lighthearted and humorous, this show is for you.

    The saturated and vivid colors contrasting with the detailed line work is unfathomable. The subjects are unique and eccentric people straight from the imagination of Cameron Adcock herself. Situated in the famous towns and destinations of Tennessee, these comical scenes are wonders to the eye.

    Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fibers

     

    Sara Dotson will present her BFA senior thesis exhibition, “Firefly Forest,” in the North Windows Gallery at the Appalachian Center for Craft.  The exhibition will be on view, November 25 through December 8, 2020.

    Dotson’s textile designs feature, “patterns inspired by her memories as a young girl of seeing the synchronous fireflies in the Smoky Mountains National park.  Each pattern was created to evoke feelings of being in an enchanted nighttime forest alive with fireflies and butterflies.”  These whimsical fabrics have been hand sewn into tote bags, cosmetic bags, pillows and more.  Handprinted versions of each pattern are also presented as limited-edition prints.

    HeadSpace, a BFA Thesis exhibition by Darby Lewis, will be on view at the Appalachian Center for Craft in the Joe L. Evins Gallery, Nov. 25 through Dec. 8, Mon-Sat., 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sun. 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The exhibition features large sculptural vessels that portray how mental illness feels. This vulnerable exhibition addresses feelings that surround anxiety and depression and includes a stunning interactive sculpture that shows how other people can offer help.

     

    It is my desire to create thought provoking works of art to bring to light mental health issues within society that have personally touched my life. I want to open up this conversation about mental health and connect to other people on a more vulnerable level.

    Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Clay

     

    School of Art, Craft, and Design candidate Kiki Dunham presents their final work in their BFA Thesis Exhibition, “Groovy Glyphs: A Creature Feature”, opening Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020 in the Appalachian Center for Craft Front Gallery. Their senior thesis show displays their ceramic and illustration skills learned throughout their time in the Arts program at TTU. The show consists of ceramic handbuilt wall hangings that tell a story. The designs, as Dunham describes, “are meant to be lively, fun, and most importantly, entertaining”.  Through the use of underglazes, heavy carving and selective glazing, they create pieces with depth, that are visually interesting and pushed beyond the expected norm.  Exhibit dates: Nov. 25-Dec. 8, 2020.

    In order to safely distance the audience from one another we will only be accommodating 32 people in the auditorium per performance. Audiences will be accommodated on a first-come-first-served basis.

    THE STORY: 

    GROSS INDECENCY uses trial transcripts, personal correspondence, interviews and other source materials to tell the story of the downfall of the great man of letters whose artistic genius has long been overshadowed by the scandal surrounding his imprisonment. “His style was his umbrella, his armor, his all-purpose defense system, and for many years it seemed to shelter Oscar Wilde most effectively. There came a moment, however, in 1895 when the playwright was betrayed by his own wit, after which he would never again be able to gain control of his life.
