Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fibers

Sara Dotson will present her BFA senior thesis exhibition, “Firefly Forest,” in the North Windows Gallery at the Appalachian Center for Craft.  The exhibition will be on view, November 25 through December 8, 2020.

Dotson’s textile designs feature, “patterns inspired by her memories as a young girl of seeing the synchronous fireflies in the Smoky Mountains National park.  Each pattern was created to evoke feelings of being in an enchanted nighttime forest alive with fireflies and butterflies.”  These whimsical fabrics have been hand sewn into tote bags, cosmetic bags, pillows and more.  Handprinted versions of each pattern are also presented as limited-edition prints.

HeadSpace:  Darby Lewis Senior Thesis Exhibition

Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Clay

HeadSpace, a BFA Thesis exhibition by Darby Lewis, will be on view at the Appalachian Center for Craft in the Joe L. Evins Gallery, Nov. 25 through Dec. 8, Mon-Sat., 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sun. 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The exhibition features large sculptural vessels that portray how mental illness feels. This vulnerable exhibition addresses feelings that surround anxiety and depression and includes a stunning interactive sculpture that shows how other people can offer help.

It is my desire to create thought provoking works of art to bring to light mental health issues within society that have personally touched my life. I want to open up this conversation about mental health and connect to other people on a more vulnerable level.

“Groovy Glyphs: A Creature Feature”, Kiki Dunham Senior Thesis Exhibition

Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Clay

School of Art, Craft, and Design candidate Kiki Dunham presents their final work in their BFA Thesis Exhibition, “Groovy Glyphs: A Creature Feature”, opening Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020 in the Appalachian Center for Craft Front Gallery. Their senior thesis show displays their ceramic and illustration skills learned throughout their time in the Arts program at TTU. The show consists of ceramic handbuilt wall hangings that tell a story. The designs, as Dunham describes, “are meant to be lively, fun, and most importantly, entertaining”.  Through the use of underglazes, heavy carving and selective glazing, they create pieces with depth, that are visually interesting and pushed beyond the expected norm.  Exhibit dates: Nov. 25-Dec. 8, 2020.

In order to safely distance the audience from one another we will only be accommodating 32 people in the auditorium per performance. Audiences will be accommodated on a first-come-first-served basis.

THE STORY: 

GROSS INDECENCY uses trial transcripts, personal correspondence, interviews and other source materials to tell the story of the downfall of the great man of letters whose artistic genius has long been overshadowed by the scandal surrounding his imprisonment. “His style was his umbrella, his armor, his all-purpose defense system, and for many years it seemed to shelter Oscar Wilde most effectively. There came a moment, however, in 1895 when the playwright was betrayed by his own wit, after which he would never again be able to gain control of his life.

In Monya Nikahd’s exhibition Interwoven, she weaves a picture of a warped time perspective, by manipulating an ancient craft to become relative in a digital society. Opening on Nov. 11 until the 24, you can view her exhibition in the front gallery at the Appalachian Center for Craft. The gallery hours are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday.

“The loom, the old ancestor to the computer, has lived its life as a large component to the progression of humankind. My work is produced on this analog machine, using high thread counts, unconventional and thin materials, and weaving cryptic code-like patterns.”

Open for two weeks, you can catch a glimpse of the art of weaving as a ‘new media.’
