  • Sonya Bowman Retirement

    Please join the library in extending congratulations to Sonya Bowman who will be retiring in February.  Sonya has served the campus community managing the Library’s Circulation Department and in more recent years fulfilling Faculty, Staff, and Student requests for Interlibrary Loans.    Sonya was the Tech Ambassador of the month in April 2003 and was the recipient of the 2002 University’s Outstanding Staff Award. Sonya invites the campus community to visit her office (room 145A)  through the remainder of January between the hours of 7:30 – 4 p.m. There will be a journal available for you to offer your congratulations to Sonya.

    Tech football alumni look to honor Don Wade in Football Operations Center

    Ever since Tennessee Tech announced plans for a Football Operations Center, dozens of former players have stepped forward to say, “I want to be a part of this.”

    One of those former players is Sam Smith, `83 geology. When Smith saw that the new facility included opportunities to name spaces both inside and outside, he knew he wanted to do something to honor Don Wade. Wade served as Tech’s head football coach from 1968 to 1982, and as athletic director from 1974 to 1980.

    “In my four years at Tech, I learned that Coach Wade was genuine,” said Smith. “He was tough, sarcastically funny, loyal and loving – albeit tough love. Coach Wade’s impact continues to influence my life today.”

    Smith began making phone calls to former teammates, and soon he had organized a group of dedicated football alumni who plan to raise $500,000 for a Don Wade Memorial inside the Football Operations Center.

  • Chemistry Students Selected for ACS Leadership Award

    Chemistry Students Selected for ACS Leadership Award

    The Department of Chemistry would like to recognize two of our of students for receiving the Student Leadership Award from the American Chemical Society. Recipients of this award are selected from competitive pools of students from United States and international universities based on their leadership skills and extracurricular activities. The students selected possess the skills and potential to become future leaders within the ACS professional society.

    Courtney LaPointe, a senior chemistry major from Hendersonville, TN, was one of 21 students to receive the award and attend the ACS virtual Leadership Institute in 2021. Rebecca Firth, a junior chemistry major from Kingsport, TN, was one of 16 students selected to receive the award in 2022, and she will be attending the Leadership Institute in Atlanta, GA in January.

    The Leadership Institute is an invitation-only conference that allows students to attend workshops and network with other student leaders from around the world, as well as ACS leaders from local sections, technical divisions, and the ACS national board.
