Employee Performance Evaluation Time is Here
Beginning this month, the HR department will provide mandatory performance evaluation training to all supervisors for staff positions and elective training to staff employees.
- Mandatory Supervisor Training will be assigned through the BeAware application in Tech Express. The training is self-paced, takes approximately one hour, and should be completed by March 31st.
- Elective Employee Training will be provided until April 13th via Microsoft Teams. Sign up for training here: https://go.tntech.edu/training
The training for supervisors and staff employees will include an overview of key changes to the performance evaluation form for 2023 that includes new sections covering the Wings Up Way and Training and Development.
Key Dates to Keep in Mind:
- Supervisors review job descriptions by February 28.
- Employees complete elective performance evaluation training by March 31st.
- Supervisors complete mandatory performance evaluation training by March 31st.
- Supervisors create a plan by March 31st.
- Employees complete their Self Evaluation by April 15th.
- Supervisors complete Employee’s Evaluation by May 1st.
- Reviewing Officers review Supervisor’s Evaluation by May 15
- Evaluation Review Meeting between Supervisor & Employee by May 31st.
- Employees Acknowledges Evaluation by May 31st.

Faculty-Led Program Abroad Workshop
Have you considered adding an international travel component to your course and taking a group of students abroad? Here at TTU, we send many faculty-led groups around the world every year to gain experiential learning and open student’s minds to a global perspective. If you would like to learn more about this opportunity, you should join us on Tuesday, February 21st from 11 am to 12 pm in the Provost’s Conference Room in Derryberry Hall for a Faculty-Led Program Abroad Workshop. Dr. Amy Miller will explain the application process and there will be experienced Faculty Leaders who will share their experiences and be able to answer any questions. Applications for Scholastic Research Award due by March 7
The Scholastic Research Award, presented by the University Research Advisory Committee, is a university-wide award for a single, significant and innovative work produced, published, performed or exhibited from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2022. Two awards, of $1,500 each, are available each year, with one reserved for tenure-track faculty and the other reserved for tenured faculty. Applications must be submitted electronically in a single PDF to jdicey@tntech.edu on or before March 7, 2023. Call for Proposals- OER training and stipend opportunity
Provost Bruce has expanded the OER (Open Educational Resources) program to save students money on textbooks. This cycle will involve prepping your course during the Spring and Summer and teaching the course with the new materials in the Fall and the TTU OER team will be supporting you through the entire process. Through the TTU OER program efforts, we have saved students over $250,000. This OER program offers stipends to selected faculty to transition their courses from traditional textbooks to zero-cost course materials. This program will help increase equity in access to quality, zero-cost educational materials. Faculty interested in receiving OER training and a stipend must submit an application proposal by March 15, 2023. MEGSO Speaker Event
Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Organization (MEGSO) is hosting a speaker event featuring Dr. Bruce Jo, faculty at the mechanical engineering department. Dr. Jo will be providing insights about his exciting research topics conducted at TTU such as human-robot interaction, designs for weapon systems, and inertia sensor applications. The event will be in Brown hall room 237 on Feb 16, 2023 from 11 am to 12 pm. There will be food and refreshments for everyone!

Jason Stein is inspired by the textures and forms of the geological structures and surfaces that occur, drawn to the subtleties found in such hard and unforgiving materials and landscapes. Stein highlights the juxtapositions and states of conflict and interplays between disparate elements. This chaotic and intense process of alchemy and creation gives birth to new forms. The result is finished works that speak to the visual and conceptual framework of control, hidden systems, and structures, manipulation, and transformation.
Jason Stein received a BFA in Metals and Jewelry Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2008 and received MFA in Metal Design from East Carolina University in 2010. He taught at Central Piedmont Community College from 2017-2021. He completed artist residencies at Penland in 2020, Peters Valley in 2021, and Pocosin in 2022.

Jennifer Crupi Sculptural Jewelry Exhibition
The Joan Derryberry Art Gallery will be hosting a gallery talk and reception for metalsmith Jennifer Crupi on Feb. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the Roaden University Center 124. Her sculptural jewelry series delicately captures the intimate relationship between communication and body language. “These handcrafted, interactive objects point out various gestures or postures and their associated meanings, in the hope viewers will realize the importance of how our bodies speak for us.” This event is funded by Center Stage. Consider serving as a judge for 18th Annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day
The 18th Annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day is planned for in person at the Hooper Eblen on Wed. and Thurs., April 19 and 20. The event, which is designed to promote and provide a venue for presenting student research and creative inquiry, is open to undergraduate/graduate students from all departments. We need judges from across campus to evaluate the students’ work. If you are an advisor, we encourage you to work with your students and sign off on their submission forms.
Poster judging will be from 4 p.m to 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 19 at the Hooper Eblen centre this year. Students are invited to be available to discuss posters, and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Rural Reimagined Faculty Grant Program Recognizes Dr. Nicole Henniger
Rural Reimagined would like to recognize Dr. Nicole Henniger (Counseling and Psychology) for receiving Level 2 funding ($2,500-$10,000) from our Faculty Grant Program. Dr. Henniger proposed her project titled “Healthcare Provider Attitudes Towards Substance Use Disorder Treatment in Tennessee,” which will use survey methodology to not only “investigate the prevalence and effects of stigma towards drug users” in a sample of Tennessean physical and mental healthcare providers but also potential stigma moderators, “including healthcare providers’ mental models of addiction and experience treating substance use.” Her project will increase understanding of the stigma’s psychological origins, resulting in better-informed training programs for counteracting harmful mentalities and “more effective treatment and support for rural Tennesseans struggling with addiction.” We congratulate Dr. Henniger and encourage other faculty members to submit their ideas in the future!

Consider participating in the 18th Annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day
The 18th annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day will be Wednesday and Thursday, Apr. 19 and 20, 2023, at the Hooper Eblen this year. The event, which is designed to promote student research and creative inquiry and provide a venue for presenting that work, is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all departments. All students must work with your advisor and your advisor should sign off on your submission forms. To participate in the event, students must submit an abstract (limited to 250 words) of their project via the abstract submission link by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, March 8. No abstracts will be accepted after this date. It is expected that each submitted abstract will be developed into a poster (or paper for those in the English Department) to be presented during the event.

Love Potion Pre-sale Extended to Feb 6!
Did you forget to order your love potions or are you in need of a last minute Valentine’s gift for a partner, friend, or coworker? If so, you’re in luck because the Student Members of the American Chemical Society is extending our love potion fundraiser for one additional day! You can purchase our love potions (plastic test tubes filled with M&Ms) from our Square Store today, Feb. 6, and we’ll deliver them to a campus office (for faculty and staff) or mailbox (for students) on Monday, Feb 13. Individual love potions are $2 or you can buy 3 for $5. You will be contacted via email after you order to determine the delivery location. We can even add a short note to the tag for you!
