“Flipping” Traditional Approaches to Teaching
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning for this Tuesday’s Tech Teaches workshop on Flipped Classrooms. In this session we will be “flipping” the traditional approaches to teaching while offering some examples of ways to incorporate effective strategies. Instructors can use various tools such as Flip or Video Note to create assignments and assessments that involve video responses, such as having students record themselves explaining a concept or giving a presentation. These platforms are popularly used for the Flipped Classroom pedological model of teaching, where students can engage with the content prior to class so they can maximize opportunities of learning during class. Multicultural Affairs Black History Month Events Week of February 6-10th
Arthur of “The Sun Does Shine,” Anthony Ray Hinton, will speak on how he was convicted of the unsolved murders of two fast-food restaurant managers. He was sentenced to death and held on the state’s death row for 28 years before his exoneration and release in 2015 through the Equal Justice Initiative efforts. Anthony Ray Hinton will speak on Tuesday, February 7th at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room located in the Roaden University Center.

Eagle Works Elevator Pitches
Do you get nervous when you have to make presentations? Are you never sure how to start? Do you just want to improve the skills you have? This workshop will help you prepare for the Idea Challenge on Feb. 15 (more details on the Eagle Works website!), and teach skills that will be useful in class and career! Being able to give a short elevator pitch about yourself or your idea could make a difference in your future! We will also allow time for working on your pitch and getting assistance from Eagle Works staff.
This workshop will be on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. in the iMakerspace. The iMakerspace is on the third floor of Volpe Library. Use the north staircase (past the MyTECH helpdesk) to access. If you need an accessible entrance, please email Andrea at akruszka@tntech.edu before 4:30 p.m. that day to arrange.

In consultation with the Tennessee Tech Office of Governmental Affairs and our consultants at Cornerstone Government Affairs, we are launching internal applications for FY24 Federal and State funding requests. Research Hour
There have been a number of new faces and efforts focused on transparency within the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED). Dr. Pinkert and ORED will begin hosting a Research Hour (townhall-type forum), tentatively targeting two meetings each semester. It will begin with a 5-10 minute topical area of interest, followed by an open Q and A (related to the topical area or any other ORED-related activity).
The first Research Hour will be held at 11:00 am on Friday February 10th in the President’s Conference Room where we will provide an overview of our federal appropriations process for FY24.

Rural Reimagined Faculty Grant Program Recognizes Dr. Hermann-Turner’s Team
Rural Reimagined would like to recognize Dr. Katherine Hermann-Turner (Counseling and Psychology) and Dr. Jonathan Wiley (Counseling and Psychology) for receiving Level 2 funding ($2,500-$10,000) from our Faculty Grant Program. Dr. Hermann-Turner’s team proposed their project titled “Rural Mothers Birth Experiences,” which uses a qualitative phenomenological mythology study to explore how support systems for “postpartum women in rural communities could affect mothers’ perceptions of birthing experiences, with special attention to birth trauma,” by studying participant’s unique experiences. Their project could help local counselors better advocate and support women’s needs as well as potentially make changes to therapeutic services in rural Tennessee communities “and subsequently to women in rural communities across the country and the world.” We congratulate Drs. Hermann-Turner and Wiley and encourage other faculty members to submit their ideas in the future!

Equestrian Team Hosts Horse Show at Hyder-Burks
This weekend the Equestrian Team will be hosting an IHSA Western Horse Show at Hyder-Burks Pavilion.
The competition spans over two days:
Saturday February 4: 12pm-7pm
Sunday February 5: 8am-3pm
Admission is free.
The Equestrian Team is a student group of horse enthusiasts. Members participate in meetings, campus events, fundraisers, team, weekly lessons, practices, and competitions. There are no tryouts or deadlines to join. Previous riding experience is not required.
The team competes within the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association against local colleges. IHSA competition is unique in that it does not require students to own a horse to participate. Horses are provided by the participating schools and assigned to riders using a draw format. Riders are judged on their ability to communicate with an unfamiliar mount.
