This week in the Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar, TTU Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate student Chris Swindell will describe work he did as part of the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) summer program at ORNL. In his presentation A SULI Summer Experience at ORNL: Data-aware Optimization of PARADYSE, Chris will talk about his experience in the SULI program and how he tested data-aware techniques to significantly enhance the efficiency of a primary computational bottleneck associated with the analysis of neutron scattering data used to study materials. The seminar will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210. (Snacks will be served starting at 3:30pm.) These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Susan Olmsted, Vanderbilt University
This week in the Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar, our speaker, Susan Olmsted from Vanderbilt University, will present a very different approach to answering the same “Big Questions” we heard about last week. Susan uses a high energy particle collider — the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) — to search for the existence of a never-before-seen particle. In her talk Search for Heavy Gauge Bosons Decaying to Tau Leptons using Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-proton Collisions at CMS, Susan will introduce the LHC, how the discovery of a new particle would help answer fundamental questions about the universe, and she will present details about her particular search. The seminar will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210. (Snacks will be served starting at 3:30pm.) Seminar about new machine learning research consulting service Sept. 22
Tennessee Tech’s College of Engineering is now offering a consulting service for campus departments in need of machine learning research guidance.
An informational seminar will be held Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. at Bruner Hall 228.
“I’m truly excited about this,” said computer science Ph.D. student Katie Brown, who has taken on the role of machine learning research consultant. “I’m getting to learn what other people are doing across campus with machine learning. I get to mentor and help.”

Computer science professor William Eberle said the need for the machine learning research consulting service arose from the numerous requests for assistance that came to the computer science department from throughout the university.
“We’ve been fielding questions for a while from students and faculty who have needed help with machine learning, data mining, AI and high-level umbrella tasks,” he said.
“Katie is here to help with research efforts going on in the university – that’s the primary focus. Faculty members can come and talk to her, and students who are working with faculty members can come and talk to her.”

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Dr. Frank Gonzalez, Oak Ridge National Lab
Our first Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar of the year will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210. (Snacks will be served starting at 3:30pm.) The speaker will be Dr. Frank Gonzalez from Oak Ridge National Lab. Dr. Gonzalez is part of a team looking for “mirror matter”, which is often explained in the popular press as a search for an alternate “mirror universe”. Dr. Gonzalez will discuss this work and how it connects with scientists’ ongoing efforts to better understand the universe at a fundamental level. Assistant Professor VanNeste receives patent
Assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering Charles VanNeste recently received a patent for an omnidirectional sensing device that can help determine an object’s change in position, velocity or speed, which is important in fields ranging from robotics systems to electric vehicles. Other sensing devices are available in the market, but most require numerous sensing components and large amounts of energy. They are also expense, and few are omnidirectional. VanNeste also recently published a manuscript for this work, available online (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9827944), in the IEEE Sensors Journal. The Office of Sponsored Programs congratulates Assistant Professor VanNeste on this achievement.

Office of Sponsored Programs establishes search committees for new positions
The Office of Sponsored Programs has established search committees for its three new upper-level positions: director of sponsored programs, director of research compliance, and post-award team manager. The committees represent a diverse set of research expertise from across campus. Michael Aikens will lead the first, with MK Karafonda, Jeanette Luna, Rory Roberts, and Gail Ligon rounding out the team. Karafonda will lead the director of research compliance search, with Steve Seiler, Steven Hayslette, Greg Holt, and Liz Humphrey. Karafonda will also lead the committee to hire the post-award team manager with Michael Aikens, Anysa Milum, Gail Ligon, Terri McWilliams, and Justin Murdock.
