  • FY24 Federal Appropriations guidelines for Tennessee Tech University is now post

    In consultation with the Tennessee Tech Office of Governmental Affairs and our consultants at Cornerstone Government Affairs, we are launching internal applications for FY24 Federal and State funding requests. The formatting will follow the templates that Cornerstone has provided and can be found at: https://www.tntech.edu/research

    The schedule for FY24 appropriations and federal agenda requests is as follows:

    January 24, 2023                               Cornerstone visit and faculty information session

    February 1, 2023                               Call for proposals (Cornerstone template)

    February 17, 2023                            Deadline for proposals

    February 24, 2023                            Proposal Review Meetings: culminating in requested/required edits and budget information

    March 1, 2023                                    President Oldham finalizes priorities for federal agenda

    March 15–April 15, 2023               Delegation Meetings

  • Research Hour

    There have been a number of new faces and efforts focused on transparency within the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED). Dr. Pinkert and ORED will begin hosting a Research Hour (townhall-type forum), tentatively targeting two meetings each semester. It will begin with a 5-10 minute topical area of interest, followed by an open Q and A (related to the topical area or any other ORED-related activity).

    The first Research Hour will be held at 11:00 am on Friday February 10th in the President’s Conference Room where we will provide an overview of our federal appropriations process for FY24.

  • Faculty Research Committee Announces Call for Proposals for 2022-2023

    The Faculty Research Committee is soliciting proposals for funding for 2022-2023. The application deadline is 4:30 on Friday, Feb. 24. Proposals may be submitted electronically to jdicey@tntech.edu or one hard copy delivered to the Office of Research in Derryberry Hall 305.   • Tech Faculty Seeking Graduate Students for Rural Reimagined Grant Project

    Are you a graduate student looking for a funding opportunity, opportunities for certification, and to make a meaningful difference in the Upper Cumberland area?

    A faculty team from the Departments of Sociology & Political Science, Curriculum & Instruction, and School of Human Ecology are seeking to hire 3 graduate students to work on a grant-funded project through Rural Reimagined that will bring Mental Health First Aid and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) trainings to community members throughout 4 Upper Cumberland counties.

    In this role, graduate students will become trained ACEs instructors (and will be paid during their training); and will then conduct ACEs trainings with community members primarily in Clay, Jackson, Putnam, and White counties.

    Employment will begin no later than February 1st, 2023 and end in June 2023. The pay rate is $17.00 per hour for 10 to 15 hours per week.

    Four Rural Reimagined Grants Awarded to Arts and Sciences

    The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that four of our faculty received a total of $52,771 in Rural Reimagined grants. The Center for Rural Innovation’s, Rural Reimagined Grand Challenge Faculty Grant Program aims to transform rural communities across the state through collaborations with TN Tech faculty and students.

    “We are proud of the continued innovation and community involvement of the faculty in our College,” stated Dean Roberts. “These awards allow teaching staff to continue their vital research that enriches our region.”

    Principal investigators include Dr. Erica Bower (Sociology and Political Science) “Uniting, Empowering, and Engaging our Upper Cumberland Community to Reduce Mental Health Issues and Substance Misuse,” Dr. Helen Hunt (English) “We Persist: A Women and Gender Studies Seminar in Livingston, Tennessee,” Dr. Ed Lisic (Chemistry) “Increasing Young Student Interest in STEM Education Through Games and Apps,” and Dr. Lauren Michel (Earth Sciences) “Establishment of the Upper Cumberland Climate History Project.”

    Computer science research aims to maintain 6G connectivity despite mobility

    The sixth generation of wireless networks promises mobile experiences and applications beyond imagination.

    Until something blocks the signal, that is.

    And that’s the challenge facing today’s researchers – people like Tennessee Tech Assistant Professor Muhammad Ismail – who are delving into this futuristic technology and discovering ways to maneuver around the obstacles associated with the smaller, higher-frequency signals to reap benefits like higher speeds and lower lag.

    CISE: A summer of research and learning

    Tennessee Tech computer science senior Makayla Haggerty has a vision – one that would benefit people with impaired vision.

    Sara Owens, a sophomore in the same major, aims to simplify a time-consuming verification task for Python programmers.

    Both students had the opportunity to indulge their interests through summer research projects as recipients of the university’s Creative Inquiry Summer Experience grant program.

    “It has given me real-life work experience that will help me get a job when I graduate,” Haggerty said of the program, which provides monetary assistance up to $4,000, including a $3,500 stipend, for summer internships that help undergraduate students develop research and creative inquiry skills.

    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Luke Parsons, TTU Physics

    This week’s Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will feature work from Physics major Luke Parsons. In his talk Data Analysis of Neutron Capture on 134Xe, Luke will describe his work analyzing gamma ray spectra that provide important information needed to eliminate backgrounds in very sensitive experiments designed to better understand a fundamental particle called the neutrino. Luke will also talk about how germanium detectors, like those used to collect his data, are made and characterized. The seminar will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210. (Snacks will be served starting at 3:30pm.) These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are encouraged to attend!
