The College of Arts and Sciences is thrilled to announce that The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded a five-year, $1.8 million grant to Dr. Steven Seiler (Sociology) and Dr. Elizabeth Ramsey (Human Ecology). This grant will fund the creation of the Tennessee Tech Center for Addiction Prevention, Research, and Support!

According to Dr. Seiler, “This grant presents opportunities to strengthen partnerships, establish new relationships with more community partners, and, ultimately, for work together to reduce substance misuse in our community and support those living in recovery.”

The three pillars of the project* are prevention, research, and support. Prevention includes ramping up prevention efforts among emerging adults through the Coalition both at Tennessee Tech and within the Putnam County community. The central goal of research is to help coalitions in the Upper Cumberland with anything and everything related to assessment and evaluation and to help our Upper Cumberland coalitions who are seeking or hoping to pursue prevention-related grants with building and/or strengthening their applications. Support will focus on (re)building a collegiate recovery program at Tech for students in recovery along with assisting organizations in the community with their support efforts.

Congratulations Dr. Seiler and Dr. Ramsey on putting Tennessee Tech students and surrounding communities first with your laudable efforts and goals! Wings Up!

*Counties included in this mission are Putnam, Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Smith, Van Buren, Warren, and White.

Do your part to make Putnam County beautiful! From September 23-30, teams will pick up litter throughout the community and clean up roadways. Sign up as a campus group, an organization or just as a group of friends! Participants have the option to choose their own area to clean up or to be assigned an area. Register through the TN Tech’s Office of Sustainability and all supplies will be provided.

The Tennessee Tech Swim Club is hosting an open water swim event on Saturday, September 23 at 10:45 am at Floating Mill Park on Center Hill Lake. Triathletes, competitive swimmers or any strong swimmers interested are encouraged to join us for it. There will be lifeguards and kayakers serving as safety lookouts throughout the swim. We will have a cookout at the park after the swim for those that attend.  Please contact Brad Westrick at bwestrick@tntech.edu for anyone interested in swimming or kayaking and for further information.

This project aims to highlight Golden Eagles students who excel both in and outside the classroom. Selected students will be featured in a Tech Times article and a Student Affairs Instagram post. Join us as we dedicate the chess table in front of Henderson Hall to Professor Emeritus and former Dean Paul Semmes this Thursday, September 21, 11 a.m. on Centennial Plaza in front of Henderson Hall.

 Dr. Semmes was a physics faculty member for 33 years, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for 6 years and Dean of the College for 14 years. In addition, Dr. Semmes was faculty leader of Tennessee Tech’s chess club for 28 years and is still an avid player.

Come out this Thursday to celebrate Dean Semmes, play chess and enjoy a treat! Tennessee Tech’s Chess Club will join to play chess and celebrate.

The College of Arts and Sciences, in celebration of this year’s Stonecipher Lecture, will host the University of Pennsylvania’s Adelheid Voskuhl for a lecture at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 25th, in Stonecipher Lecture Hall 113. The topic of the event, which is free and open to the public, is “Engineers and the World They Made: Machines, Policies – and Social Status in the Industrial Boom.”
