Proceeds from the event supports scholarships for students in the School of Art, Craft & Design academic program. Shibori is a Japanese technique of manual, resist dyeing used to make patterns on fabrics. Learn to create many patterned textiles utilizing Shibori techniques, a process with a long, cherished history in Japan.

Learn about firing earthenware in the soda kiln. Explore a variety of surface decorating techniques including stamping, staining, using slips/sigs and decal layering techniques. We’ll primarily be working on the wheel but handbuilders are welcome.

Discuss the characteristics of wood, then jump into design and create full-scale drawings. Cover machines used for dimensioning and shaping of rough lumber into finely crafted furniture, including using the router for fine details. Adapt the classic Shaker stool design to make it your own. Build on the strengths found in the traditional design and modify it with modern technology. Design and build a stool using turning techniques that allow for maximum creativity. Experiment with texture and finishes before learning to weave a comfy seat.
