Spring is right around the corner for our area; this could mean Tornadoes
Tornadoes can occur any time of the year, but usually occur in the spring and summer. Considered nature’s most violent and erratic storms, they are formed by severe thunderstorms, and consist of whirling winds of up to 300 miles per hour. Tornadoes can sweep through an area, causing serious damage and destruction. In addition to injuries and structural damage, electrical shorts, gas leaks, etc., may create fires or other hazards. Everyone must understand the terminology associated with tornado safety.
What is the difference between a Tornado WATCH and a Tornado WARNING?
A Tornado WATCH is issued by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center meteorologists who watch the weather 24/7 across the entire U.S. for weather conditions that are favorable for tornadoes and severe weather. A watch can cover parts of a state or several states. Watch and prepare for severe weather and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio to know when warnings are issued.
A Tornado WARNING is issued by your local NOAA National Weather Service Forecast Office meteorologists who watch the weather 24/7 over a designated area. This means a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar and there is a serious threat to life and property to those in the path of the tornado. A tornado warning indicates that you should ACT NOW to find safe shelter! A warning can cover parts of counties or several counties in the path of danger.
Please take the time now to become familiar with shelter areas located in your facility. Should a Tornado WARNING be issued, seek immediate shelter inside a building at your designated shelter area. If you have questions, please contact your respective Building Coordinator.

Accounting Club Meeting on February 4th!

Information about us: The Accounting Club is a student-run organization designed for students who want to explore accounting as a major, and all students are invited. By joining our meetings, you get the opportunity to speak to and hear from students who are currently accounting majors and accounting professionals who know what it takes to be an accountant in the real world.

Invitation of Participants to Tennessee Tech Pilot EV Demonstration Project
Tennessee Tech is currently conducting a U.S. Department of Energy-supported electric vehicle demonstration project to promote EV awareness and readiness in the Upper Cumberland region in Tennessee. Volunteers from Tennessee Tech and the Upper Cumberland region, are needed to participate in the project. Qualified volunteers will be retaining a market EV product (e.g., Nissan Leaf and plug-in hybrid pickup truck) for their daily applications for up to two weeks at no cost other than charging cost. The participating volunteers will have the opportunities to learn more information about EV such as the upfront purchase cost, the operational cost, EV performance and operation, and others. GRADUATE STUDENTS: Extended Application Deadline for Spring 2021 Graduation
In addition to satisfying all degree requirements, a candidate must file an Application for Graduation at the beginning of the semester in which the degree is expected to be conferred.
The last date for the filing of the application for spring 2021 graduation is Monday, February 8th, 2021.
Spring 2021 Graduation Application
A graduate student shall be enrolled during the term in which the degree is awarded. If a student applies for graduation but fails to satisfy graduation requirements, the student must reapply.

Impact publication wins Gold Award
Tennessee Tech’s 2020 IMPACT publication recently won the Gold Award in the CASE District III Fundraising – Annual Reports and Fund Reports Publication category! The CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) District III awards recognize the very best in advancement across the southeast. The 2020 edition of IMPACT highlighted the areas of focus for the 2020 “I Heart Tech Students” Campaign: Tech’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, Accessible Education Center, Counseling Center, Eagle Assistance Grant and Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who helped make this publication a success! The 2021 “I Heart Tech Students” Campaign launches in just one week, so keep an eye out for more information.

2022 TBR Student Engagement, Retention, and Success Call for Proposals
TBR recently released a call for proposals for the FY 2022 TBR Student Engagement, Retention, and Success (SERS) initiative. All applications are due on March 25, 2021. The grant period will be from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 and the maximum funding is $50,000.
Anyone planning to submit a TBR SERS proposal should submit the internal online Notice of Intent to Submit Proposal form as soon as possible. The Office of Research will coordinate obtaining legal counsel’s review and all required signatures (including Tech’s Diversity/Equity Officer, authorized representative for grants and sponsored programs, and business officer) but we must have advance notice of your planned submission via the internal Notice of Intent to Submit Proposal form.

Picture a Scientist Free Virtual/In-Person Film Screening, Feb. 8
Picture a Scientist takes viewers through cramped laboratories to spectacular field sites, where they will encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. A biologist, a chemist, and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their experiences overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights as they work to revolutionize the culture of science. This event is cosponsored by the Department of Earth Sciences, the TN Space Grant, and the Women’s Center. The film screening will take place on Monday, February 8, at 7 p.m. virtually. For those who would like an in-person socially distanced screening option, the film will be shown in the Stonecipher Lecture Hall (SLH 126) at the same time. “What Affects One Group Affects All of Us”: Black Student Activism at Tennessee
The Tennessee Tech University Archives’s newest exhibit is now open in the Multicultural Affairs’s case on the top floor of the University Center! “What Affects One Group Affects All of Us”: Black Student Activism at Tennessee Tech highlights the range of Black student activism from 1968 to 2020. Students have pushed for the university and the broader community to respect the humanity, needs, and culture of Black students and people. The exhibit displays photographs of events and clippings from publications written by Black students.
For those who can’t attend in person or who have low-vision, the posters for the exhibit and a hyperlinked list of the items on display are available here.
The exhibit is part of the Office of Multicultural Affairs’s celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Leona Lusk Officer Black Cultural Center. The last two digital exhibits for the anniversary can be browsed here. Keep your eyes out later this spring for another digital exhibit on the history of Black students and employees at Tech!
