Dr. Carla Hurt Travels to Curacao to Assist in Filming a Documentary
Dr. Carla Hurt, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology, traveled to Curacao to assist National Geographic and Disney Plus, in obtaining footage of the Alpheus armatus (pistol shrimp) for a documentary on underdogs of the biological world.
Dr. Hurt and her collaborator from Seattle University, Kristin Hultgren, worked on location in Curacao with the film team Wildstar Films (United Kingdom) in January to film the pistol shrimp underwater and in an aquarium. The pistol shrimp received its common name from the loud snapping noise they make with their large claw. Alpheus armatus live in curly cue sea anemones and protect their anemone home from predators, such as fireworms. This trip was funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
The film group is also interested in generating a three-dimensional image of the claw to look at the snapping mechanism. Dr. Hurt and her team brought back claw samples to scan for the three-dimensional imaging and are hoping to work with the IMaker space on Tennessee Tech’s campus to obtain these scans.

Fifth annual I Heart Tech Students fundraising initiative runs through March 27
Tennessee Tech’s 5th annual I Heart Tech Students fundraising initiative kicked off yesterday!
Each year, the Golden Eagle community comes together to provide support for programs that put students first, and faculty and staff gifts make a huge impact! Thanks to the funds raised in previous I Heart Tech Students initiatives, the Food Pantry expanded their hours and purchased a new refrigerator to provide healthy options for students who face food insecurity. The Veterans Center purchased new computers for student veterans. And faculty and staff were instrumental in establishing the Eagle Assistance Grant, which provides emergency funds for students in need. When Tech experienced one of the toughest years in history in 2020, students had the support and emergency aid they needed, thanks to you.
A gift of any amount to any area on campus between Feb. 14 and March 27 counts in the I Heart Tech Students total. The amount of the gift isn’t as important as simply the act of giving.

Rural Reimagined Faculty Grant Program Recognizes Dr. Samantha Hutson’s Team
Rural Reimagined would like to recognize Dr. Samantha Hutson (Community Health and Nutrition), Dr. Hannah Upole (Design Studies), Ms. Allison Coutinho (Nutrition and Dietetics), and Ms. Amber Buckner (Community Health and Nutrition) for receiving Level 3 funding ($10,000-$25,000) from our Faculty Grant Program. Dr. Hutson’s team proposed their project titled “Spring into Health and Wellness: A Pop-Up Event,” which will supply take-home wellness boxes to families in the Upper Cumberland’s rural areas. Their project will support the development of these rural areas by providing “wellness-related resources that can help them to develop healthy life skills, such as increasing their knowledge of healthy eating habits, improving financial well-being, and understanding the ways that personal hygiene can impact overall wellness.” We congratulate Dr. Hutson, Dr. Upole, Ms. Coutinho, and Ms. Buckner and encourage other faculty members to submit their ideas in the future!
