    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Cricket Bergner, TTU Physics

    TTU Physics major Cricket Bergner will give the Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this Friday. Cricket spent the summer working with scientists at ORNL and General Atomics who focus on nuclear fusion for energy production. In her talk Sheath-Driven Impurity Modeling for Helicon Wave Operation in DIII-D Using the STRIPE Suite, Cricket will describe her summer experience, what she learned about controlled nuclear fusion, and the research she conducted. The seminar will be at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210, with snacks served starting at 3:30pm. These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!

    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Dr. Chattrakun Kanokporn, TTU

    The Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar returns to its usual Friday this week with a seminar given by Dr. Chattrakun Kanokporn (“Tu”), a biological physicist who has recently joined the faculty at Tennessee Tech from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tu’s talk, Improved site-specific labeling for smFRET measurements using non-natural incorporation, will describe a technique for studying biomolecular dynamics with very high spatial precision. The seminar will be at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210, with snacks served starting at 3:30pm. These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!

    Tennessee Tech researchers Bradley Northern, Dr. Denis Ulybyshev, Trey Burks, Marlana Hatcher, and Dr. Michael Rogers have been granted U.S. Patent No. 12,418,557 B2 for “Systems and Methods for Cyber Risk Assessment for Computing Systems.” This innovation introduces automated risk scoring, sensitivity analysis, and proactive defensive actions, enhancing the resilience and security of modern computing systems.

    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Dr. Kenneth Long, MIT

    The first Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar of the semester will be this Monday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210 (with snacks served at 3:30pm). Our speaker is a TTU alumnus, now a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT, who was closely involved in a recent highly-anticipated result from the CMS collaboration associated with the effort to find missing elements in the fundamental physics “periodic table”, which is called the Standard Model. In his talk Measuring the mass of the W boson: a portrait of a complex measurement at the Large Hadron Collider, Dr. Long will explain how this experiment was performed and provide context to understand why the result is so interesting scientifically. These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!
