The Office of Sponsored Programs announces progress in growing its team to enhance our support in the pursuit of external funding. New/revised positions include a post-award team manager, director of research compliance, director of sponsored programs, post-award specialists and a contract compliance specialist. These roles will be the basis of our new, expanded infrastructure to help grow the university’s research portfolio. As candidates are identified and interviewed, they will be able to meet with faculty and staff to provide input. If you know qualified candidates, please ask them to apply. Thank you for your assistance as we assessed the campus’s needs and built solutions to provide the foundation for further growth. The Office of Research is Moving…?
As TTU moves closer to centralization and expansion of Research Administration and Compliance services, The Office of Research staff will be shuffling workspaces. Our various rooms are being renovated and subdivided in order to make way for additional staff. The space in Derryberry Hall Room 128 will be tackled first. During this next week, our computers, phones, and working papers may not always be together in the same space at the same time. Email is the most reliable way to reach us during this transition. Joe Driver, Jill DeBord, and Mark Lyman have moved to DH 155 temporarily. Mary Kathryn Karafonda will relocate to DH 326. Amy Hill remains in her space in Southwest Hall for the time being. Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Richard Mitchell (Physics)
We will have an Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this week featuring work from Physics Major Richard Mitchell. The talk, Integral method for fitting nuclear decay chains, will present a new technique for determining radioactive half-lives from complex, low-statistics data sets. The seminar will be this Friday, April 22nd at 4pm in Volpe Library 248. It will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend! R101: Responsible Conduct of Research
Join the Office of Research in partnership with the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFÉ) for the final session in our Research 101 series: Responsible Conduct in Research. Responsible Conduct in Research is simply good citizenship applied to professional life. Important shared values for the responsible conduct in research that bind all researchers together are honesty, accuracy, efficiency, and objectivity. This workshop will build on the already required CITI training and offer insights into some conflicting situations that arise during the conduct of research. The Office of Research has new email inboxes to enhance its efficiency. Please direct pre-award issues to preaward@tntech.edu, managed by Joe Driver who prepares budgets and proposals, and fields pre-award policy questions. Amy Hill remains our pre-award coordinator/submitter, editor, and communications manager. Please send agreements for review and official signature to agreements@tntech.edu, managed by Catherine Wallace, specialist for award negotiations, subawards, and non-monetary agreements. Please direct non-bookkeeping award issues to awards@tntech.edu, managed by Mark Lynam, contact on award report submission and compliance review for budget adjustments. Mark also provides support for revisions, extensions, and policy/regulatory issues along with CITI training, Visual Compliance checks, and tech transfers. The research@tntech.edu inbox will receive sponsor- and general submission portal-related correspondence. Thank you for your support during this transition!

All students planning to participate in Research and Creative Inquiry Day must complete the online abstract submission form at by 11:59 p.m., Wed., March 9, 2022. After that time, no additional abstracts will be accepted. A confirmation email will be sent to the primary author upon abstract submission. If that email is not received, the abstract has not been successfully submitted. If this occurs, the student should resubmit or contact Amy Hill (amyhill@tntech.edu) before the abstract submission deadline.

Applications for Scholastic Research Award due by February 28
The Scholastic Research Award, presented by the University Research Advisory Committee, is a university-wide award for a single, significant and innovative work produced, published, performed or exhibited from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2021. Two awards, of $1,500 each, are available each year, with one reserved for tenure-track faculty and the other reserved for tenured faculty. Applications must be submitted electronically in a single PDF to sstorie@tntech.edu on or before Feb. 28, 2022. Consider serving as a judge for 17th Annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day
The 17th Annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day is planned for in person at the Hooper Eblen on Wed. and Thurs., April 20 and 21 (if the event needs to be virtual, participants will be informed by the end of February). The event, which is designed to promote and provide a venue for presenting student research and creative inquiry, is open to undergraduate/graduate students from all departments. We need judges from across campus to evaluate the students’ work.
Poster judging will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 20. Students are invited to be available to discuss posters, and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Research 101: Subrecipient Monitoring
Join the Office of Research and the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFÉ) on Thursday, February 3rd at 11 am as we kick off our Research 101 series for the spring semester with a session focused on Subrecipient Monitoring. This session focuses on everything related to subrecipients from determining if an entity is a Subrecipient or a contractor to subrecipient monitoring itself -the procedures related to it and the roles and responsibilities involved in the process.
