Five Tennessee Tech psychology students traveled with Dr. Stephanie Kazanas, Dr. Nicole Henniger, and Doug Hensley to the Association for Psychological Science (APS) Annual Convention held in San Francisco from May 23-26, 2024.

The students presented the results of their research studies on topics such as multitasking and memory performance, the effects cluttered environments on attention, motivational responses to social media fitness influencers, the experience of intimate partner violence and depression in college students, and athletes’ attitudes towards seeking mental health treatment. Asst. Prof. of Computer Science Maanak Gupta won the College of Engineering’s Kinslow Engineering Research Award for his paper “From ChatGPT to ThreatGPT: Impact of Generative AI in Cybersecurity and Privacy.” It has been cited 200 times and downloaded over 50,000 times since published in IEEE Access Aug. 1, 2023.

“The award is a testament of the impactful research we are doing in our ABCyS lab at the intersection of generative AI and cybersecurity and recognition to my students who work relentlessly on cutting-edge research,” Gupta said. Read more

Collaboration is key. That’s what eight Tennessee Tech computer science students learned, along with Texas A&M University electrical and computer engineering students, at the Strategic Holistic Intrusion Defense in Power Systems “SHIELD” workshop at TAMU’s Center for Infrastructure Renewal.

Tech’s Muhammad Ismail, PI of the National Science Foundation Energy Power Control Networks grant that funded the workshop, said students learned how their areas of expertise converge to ensure security and efficiency of critical infrastructure.

TNGIC 2024 (The Tennessee Geographic Information Council) was a great success, with an amazing turnout of TN Tech current students and recent alumni. Biology Master’s student, Mark Rine won the TennesseeView Remote Sensing Student Paper Competition with his presentation on “Spatiotemporal Fish Assemblage Patterns Associated with Fluctuating Flow in a Cumberland River Watershed in Tennessee”.  Dr. Kit Wheeler is Mark’s advisor, and he completed this project as part of his project for Dr. Samantha Allen’s Fundamental of Environmental Spatial Analysis course. Congratulations, Mark, on your hard work!

Are you incorporating machine learning into your research? Are you prepared – or preparing students – for the next generation of AI and machine learning jobs?

A workshop for Tennessee Tech’s new Warp 1 high-performance computing cluster will be held April 23 at 10:20 a.m. in Clement 212. Attendees will use hands-on ML examples and learn how to access the cluster, load datasets, run ML code and use its graphical interface with Jupiter Notebooks.

Associate Professor of Computer Science Mike Rogers is the principal investigator of the National Science Foundation grant: “CC (Campus Cyberinfrastructure) Compute.” Tech’s Center for Energy Systems Research and Information Technology Services are also involved in managing the project.

This Friday’s seminar will feature Mateo Cacheiro (TTU Physics), Luke Chapman (TTU Electrical Engineering), Emma Krebs, (TTU Physics/Mathematics), and Katherine Smith (Cookeville High School) who will each describe some of their recent research work. Titles and abstracts for the presentations can be found here. The seminar will be at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210 with snacks served starting at 3:30pm.
