Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Josie McQuail Introduces Students to Rugby, TN
Rural Reimagined wants to recognize Dr. Josie McQuail, faculty in the English department, for the rural service-learning projects and writing assignments that her English 4995 classes have conducted in Rugby, TN. Rugby is both a living village and historical site located about an hour and a half east of Cookeville. Over the past couple of years, Dr. McQuail’s students have completed service-learning projects to help the Rugby community, including an Energy Conservation Plan, a new museum exhibit, and a marketing plan for educating local public school age children, among others. Additionally, students have participated in other initiatives like transcribing diaries and letters in the Rugby archives and written historical fiction pieces based on the area. Family’s ties to area, belief in farming inspire gift to School of Agriculture
Joyce Glasscock Reece says her family’s history with the Upper Cumberland area dates back several hundred years. When she and her son, Edward, decided to sell their Cookeville home and use the proceeds to help others, Tech was the first place that came to mind.
The John Martin Reece Endowed Scholarship is named for Joyce’s father and is awarded to students majoring in agriculture at Tech, and the Nova Glasscock Endowed Scholarship is named for Joyce’s grandmother and is also awarded to agriculture majors.
The Reeces also established the College of Agriculture and Human Ecology Endowment which is used at the discretion of Dean Darron Smith. The CAHE used a portion of the funds to purchase a side-by-side four-person off-road work vehicle equipped with GPS technology for geomapping and grid soil sampling.

Rural Reimagined congratulates Chemical Engineering professor Dr. Pedro Arce for promoting the development of the “New Type of Engineer:” Holistic, Innovative, Social, Impactful, and with an Entrepreneurial Mindset. Dr. Arce has dedicated the bulk of his career to identifying the best practices, models, and guidelines to assist in transforming the traditional engineering curriculum with the goal of forming new facilitators of learning, effectively leading to the new type of engineer. Congratulations to the College of Interdisciplinary Studies’ 2021 Alumna of the Year, Natalie Robbins! Natalie graduated from the P.S.M.-EI program in 2019. She currently works as a research analyst with the Vanderbilt Initiative for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Research.
