Recently, representatives of Tech’s College of Education visited schools and central offices in Clay and Pickett Counties. These visits are part of the college’s annual celebration and recognition of teachers/educational professionals.
“We delivered padfolios and cakes decorated with “We Appreciate You” to each of the schools and offices,” said Lisa Zagumny, Dean. “It’s essential to recognize and thank those who give so much of themselves through their dedication to and passion for educating Tennessee’s students.”

We are celebrating the end of a successful academic year and the collective contributions of our employees that made it possible. Tennessee Tech students are making an impact on their campus and in their communities through their service work and projects in a new IMPACT Cookeville Service-Learning (SVCL 4150/6150) course. This course was first offered in spring 2024 by College of Education instructor Kinsey Simone, PhD. On April 8th, students Tyree Cripps, Heather Bertram, and Melody Newman presented on their individual community resource packets, which included resources on equal opportunity, benefits of young adult literature (YAL), and promoting STEM for all to City of Cookeville Mayor Laurin Wheaton and Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter. Each student was gifted an iPad in recognition of their service from IMPACT Cookeville and the College of Education’s Jeffers Technology Endowment. After earning its first Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title since 1990 behind a dramatic, 3-2 win over SIUE in the league’s match-play championship on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles are headed to its first NCAA Tournament since nearly 35 years. Tech will learn its placement in the field with the official NCAA Tournament selection show at 1:00 p.m. and all fans are encouraged to attend, free of charge, a special viewing party in the Eagles Nest on the fourth floor of the Hooper Eblen Center.
Light refreshments will be served and the whole team and coaching staff will be in attendance to revel in the joyous occasion.

Four Tennessee Tech students, Evelyn Brachey, Mackenzie Henley, Lily Ledford, and Aaron Livesay took part in a Special Topics course on Imaging the Total Solar Eclipse this semester. Over the spring semester, they learned solar imaging and telescope techniques, and planned their images in preparation for the eclipse on April 8. They traveled to Bloomington, Indiana, in the path of totality with physics faculty Steve Robinson and Mary Kidd, where they set up their equipment as part of the Solar Eclipse Workshop hosted by Indiana University, Bloomington. They will be presenting their final images and speaking about their process on Tuesday, April 30 at 4:00 pm in BRUN 228.
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be giving away 24 oz Nalgene water bottles on Thursday, April 25 beginning at 11 a.m. in the LSC atrium by Einstein’s to celebrate Chemists Celebrate Earth Week. The goal is to promote sustainable practices through green chemistry principles and to reduce waste. There are 100 water bottles and they are first come first served. Water bottles cannot be held for anyone and are only one per person. This event is funded by SGA SOLO and open to all students. Questions can be sent to smacsttu@gmail.com.
You’re invited to join the Sounds of Science Honors Colloquium class for their recital on Friday, April 26 at 2:30 p.m. in BFA 374. The idea of this colloquium is that music accesses other areas of the brain that can be used to construct deeper understanding. Throughout the semester students in the course used music theory to demonstrate fundamental chemical concepts. During the recital each student will present a piece they composed that auditorily demonstrates a concept in chemistry or in their major. Refreshments will be provided.
