    Rural Journeys Speaker Series: Hailey Updike & Misty Phy

    The Rural Reimagined Club (RRC) is excited to announce the first Rural Journeys Speaker Series session of the semester. This series is part of the RRC’s mission to build awareness and advocacy for rural communities. Join the first session on Tuesday, February 9th, at 11am via Teams, where Hailey Updike and Misty Phy will be sharing their stories.  

    Hailey Updike, a Human Ecology major, hopes to raise awareness of the situations foster youth face and highlight the importance of Family and Consumer Sciences education. Misty Phy, a certified Peer Recovery Specialist and the founder of Moments of Mercy, will speak about how her nonprofit corporation uses peer support programs to aid those struggling with hardships.

    Rural Reimagined Internship Opportunity: Mayhem Nation

    Mayhem Nation is recruiting enthusiastic, creative, and experienced student interns to assist in production within their fast moving and highly relevant media and marketing organization. Internship responsibilities would include the production of professional sports media, social content generation, live content capture and publication, and editing. Interested students must be fluent in Adobe Creative Suite and have experience with photo and video capture, editing, and graphic design. Rural Reimagined encourages all students interested in physical fitness and CrossFit to apply for this internship opportunity. Applications will require references and relevant work samples such as social media handles.     Picture a Scientist Free Virtual/In-Person Film Screening, Feb. 8

    Picture a Scientist takes viewers through cramped laboratories to spectacular field sites, where they will encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. A biologist, a chemist, and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their experiences overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights as they work to revolutionize the culture of science. This event is cosponsored by the Department of Earth Sciences, the TN Space Grant, and the Women’s Center. The film screening will take place on Monday, February 8, at 7 p.m. virtually. For those who would like an in-person socially distanced screening option, the film will be shown in the Stonecipher Lecture Hall (SLH 126) at the same time.     Are you interested in Co-op?  Attend the first Co-op Meetup of the semester on Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Roaden University Center Multipurpose Room (2nd floor) at 11 a.m.  Any student interested in accepting a Cooperative Education position with an employer MUST attend a Co-op Meetup.

    The Co-op Meetup will explain the eligibility guidelines for enrolling in the Cooperative Education Program, which went into effect July 1, 2019 for all students.  Pre-registration to enroll in the Co-op Program is now required and attending a Co-op Meetup is your first step!  The new eligibility guidelines can be found at: https://www.tntech.edu/career/students/coop-eligibility.php.

    Recognizing and Responding to Human Trafficking

    Guest speaker, Natalie Ivey, who is the Executive Director of the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking (CCAHT), will be giving a virtual presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 2 during dead hour (11 a.m. until noon). CCAHT is the only counter-trafficking organization in East TN that unites and equips our community to end human trafficking while providing survivors with comprehensive, trauma-informed aftercare services, including case management, safe shelter, food and clothing, transportation, therapeutic services and community resources.
