The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be hosting a tabling event on Tuesday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the LSC patio. In honor of Chemists Celebrate Earth Week we will be proving information on green cleaning products and how using the principles of green chemistry helps make safer, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable cleaning products. You can also see how designing products for degradation creates items like starch-based packing peanuts that dissolve in water, whereas conventional packing peanuts persist in the environment for long periods of time. The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be kicking off Chemists Celebrate Earth Week by hosting Chemistry Department alumnus, Jonah Ralston on Monday, April 18 at 5 p.m. in LSC 1211. Jonah works as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist at Koppers in Georgia. Jonah will discuss his work, including the creating of standard operating procedures, and how Koppers is committed to a heightened awareness of process safety, product safety, and environmental stewardship. Join 21st Mortgage Corporation on Tuesday, Apr. 19, from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. after the Expo Day for a special information session in the Tech Pride Room (Roaden University Center, First Floor).

The information session will cover what 21st Mortgage is as a company, which includes what they do, their culture, career opportunities, and benefits. This event will also cover the specifics of living in the Knoxville, TN area.

Center Stage and the Commission on the Status of Women are very excited to present “Medical Misogyny: A Conversation with Maya Dusenbery” on Monday, April 18, 2022 at 7:00 PM in the Derryberry Auditorium. The author will discuss her award-winning book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leaves Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick followed by a Q&A with the audience and reception.

About the Author:

Maya Dusenbery is a journalist, editor, and author. Her book Doing Harm was a New York Times Editors’ Choice pick and the winner of the 2019 Minnesota Book Award for general nonfiction. She has been a guest on NPR, Good Morning America, and a variety of podcasts and radio programs to discuss her book, medical misogyny, and reproductive issues. Formerly the editorial director of the feminist blog Feministing.com, Maya has written for publications including the New York Times Magazine, Scientific American, Slate, Mother Jones, and Pacific Standard. She regularly speaks about gender bias in medicine to students, health care providers, patient advocates, and researchers.

Monday, Apr. 18, is the FINAL DAY to submit your Career Readiness Application for the Spring 2022 semester. All materials for Gold and Purple Career Readiness Applications must be turned in-person to the Center for Career Development (RUC 328), via email to career@tntech.edu, or online at https://www.tntech.edu/career/students/career-ready.php by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 18.

Substitutions or late submissions will not be accepted.

The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be hosting a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR) in STEM Industry panel at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12. You can attend in person in LSC 1211, or virtually through Zoom. We have four panelists that are chemists or engineers in industry that will share their stories and how DEIR issues and practices impact their jobs and lives.
