  • Budget Office – May Training

    Budget Office training sessions for May are now scheduled if anyone is interested! Below is a brief description of each training:

    General Budget Training: This training gives a big picture overview of the university budget, Banner screens, and budget revisions. This training is required for signature authority on budget revisions.

    Budget Banner Screen Training: This training focuses specifically on the Banner screens frequently used for budgeting purposes. This is an optional training course.

    Budget Shadow System Training: This training focuses specifically on our Shadow System Template. This is an optional training course.

    Position Control Budget Training: This training focuses specifically on topics related to position control including new position set ups, personnel action forms, budget revisions for permanent positions, how to verify permanent position funding, lapsed salary, etc. This is an optional training course.

  • Social Coffee with The Office of Communications and Marketing

    Take a break and join The Office of Communications and Marketing for social coffee on Thursday, April 21, in Volpe Library Room 248 at 9 a.m. This monthly event that allows Tech social media managers/contributors to share ideas, learn about what’s new on social media and collaborate. Social Coffee is open to anyone in the campus community who works with or is interested in social media. Ask questions, give comments and get tips you can use in your work to celebrate the successes and spread the news of our Golden Eagles. For questions, contact us here.

     

  • Professional Privilege Tax 2022

    For the tax year beginning on June 2, 2022 and ending June 1, 2023, an occupations tax is imposed on those persons with an Active Tennessee license or registration to practice any of the following professions:

    Attorney
    Agent(Securities)
    Broker-Dealer
    Investment Adviser
    Lobbyist
    Osteopathic Physician
    Physician

    Fifteen professions have been removed from the tax beginning June 1, 2020. See Professional Privilege Tax for a complete list of professions that were required to pay for 2020 and thereafter. This tax is imposed without regard to whether the profession is actually practiced in the state of Tennessee. (TCA, Section 67-4-1702).

    TCA 67-4-1709 provides for a governmental entity to remit the tax on behalf of its eligible employees. The amount of tax will be included as additional compensation on each affected employee’s W-2.

    TTU must report to the Department of Revenue the names and professions of eligible employees no later than June 1, 2021. Those eligible must currently be in an active status in their profession.

    Please provide the names and professions of anyone in your area of responsibility to me at dagee@tntech.edu or Gaile Palmer at gpalmer@tntech.edu at your earliest convenience, but not later than May 15, 2022. I will compile a master list to transmit to the State.

    Meet the Tech Tomorrow faculty leaders: Lenly Weathers, Education for Life

    Lenly Weathers, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering, has been named the faculty leader for the Tech Tomorrow Education for Life goal.

    “As the team leader for Education for Life, I am eager to reach out to students, faculty, staff and administrators to promote the priorities under this facet of Tech Tomorrow by improving current practices or creating new ones,” Weathers said. “This will mean continuing to evolve a Tech-unique general education curriculum to provide the foundation for technologically adept, analytically capable, career-ready graduates. Expanding the diversity of our student population is also a priority of Education for Life, as is the related goal of developing each student’s global awareness in our increasingly interconnected, global society.”

    The previous leader for this goal was Ed Lisic, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts & Sciences.

  • Support GA taxable amount

    The Office of Graduate Studies is now sending a listing of the Support GA tuition benefits paid each semester on their behalf to the Payroll/Business Office. The Spring 2022 portion will be added to the taxable income on the April 29th paycheck. This will increase the tax liability and possibly the federal income tax deduction. This amount does not increase your net pay. If you have any questions feel free to contact Dustin Agee in Payroll at 931-372-3041.

    Here is an explanation of how the IRS treats assistantships:
    Tuition benefits offered to graduate assistants are generally excluded from taxable income under section 117(d) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, section 117(d) only excludes from taxable income tuition benefits for graduate students who are engaged in teaching activities or research activities at the University. Graduate assistants not engaged in such teaching or research activities at the University cannot be excluded from taxable income under section 117(d). These assistantships do not qualify for the $5,250 exclusion.

    Meet the Tech Tomorrow faculty leaders: Tom Timmerman, Exceptional Stewardship

    Tom Timmerman, professor and chair of the Department of Decision Sciences and Management in the College of Business, has been named the faculty leader for the Tech Tomorrow Exceptional Stewardship goal.

    “Tennessee Tech is widely known for its great return-on-investment for students,” Timmerman said. “Our graduates receive well-paying jobs for the modest price they pay for a Tech education. I’m very proud of this reputation and believe that it is a key strategic strength of the university.

    “So how do we maintain this strength? We must continue to provide high value to students through high-quality programs, faculty and services. But we must provide these things while also minimizing unnecessary costs. I’m happy to lead the Exceptional Stewardship Working Group in an effort to continuously find ways to provide value to our students while controlling costs. We have an outstanding group of faculty, administrators and students with great ideas for achieving this goal and I look forward to working with them.”

    The previous leader for this goal was Ann Davis, professor of accounting in the College of Business.

  • The Burnett Recreation and Fitness Center Personnel Changes

    The Marc Burnett Recreation and Fitness Center is pleased to share the following new hires

    Les Fralix has been promoted to the position of Associate Director for the MBRC.  Les has been with the University since 2014.

    Spencer Ryan recently accepted the position of Coordinator for Intramural Sports.  Spencer has been with the University since 2017.

    Mike Storch joined the MBRC team as a Student Center Section Supervisor in February.  Mike is new to the University family.

    We look forward to sharing future information with our campus community.  Wings UP!
