  • TCRI Receives $300,000 CARES Act Grant

    TCRI Receives $300,000 CARES Act Grant

    The Center for Rural Innovation (TCRI) has received a $300,000 CARES Act grant through the federal Economic Development Administration (EDA). The grant will establish the TCRI CARES project, which will respond to economic injury as a result of coronavirus in the rural Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. The project will help 200 local businesses, create 20 student internships, broadcast 50 interactive community Zoom calls, and produce a monthly PBS television series. “This project will help our region’s entrepreneurs survive and thrive throughout the pandemic and beyond through a comprehensive approach to technical assistance, commercialization, applied research, and workforce development,” said Michael Aikens, the TCRI CARES director and PI.  Read the official EDA press release here https://eda.gov/news/press-releases/2020/07/10/cookeville-tn.htm

  • Virtual Engineering a Future Camp for Girls

    Virtual Engineering a Future Camp Activities are FREE this year!

    Engineering a Future (EAF) is a virtual Summer Camp for girls rising into the 8th or 9th grade in the state of Tennessee. The camp is designed for girls who are interested in becoming problem solvers and creative thinkers. Due to the Pandemic, EAF is being held virtually for the first time. It is a neat opportunity for young women to spend time exploring the ever-changing and exciting field of Engineering. TN Tech faculty, their students, and professional engineers will lead the activities. This year’s experiences will revolve around space exploration.

    Sessions include Cyber Puzzles, Missions to Mars and Surfing the Stars, and are offered July 10 through the 24th.

    All participants will be required to have access to an internet-ready device in order to join the activities.

    Time is of the essence since one of the activities begins July 10th!

    This camp is sponsored by NASA and the Society of Women Engineers.

    Great Move In Day 2020 Volunteering Canceled

    Greetings:

    It is with deepest regret that we must announce the cancellation of volunteers for Great Move-In Day 2020.

    We enjoyed an excellent response from our university faculty and student organizations in last year’s annual event.  We were prepared for a normal academic year and were excited about the enthusiastic responses from the Tech community, including a potential record breaking volunteer number.  However, given the severity of the coronavirus pandemic and out of concern for our students, their families, staff, and faculty, we made the difficult decision to limit the volume of individuals gathering during the move-in process. Our department worked hard to be proactive in addressing these challenges and in brainstorming collaborative solutions. But, with the coronavirus numbers on the rise again, we made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the volunteer portion of Great Move-In Day.

    Again, we are appreciative of our faculty and Tennessee Tech student organizations for such an enthusiastic response to our request for volunteers. We remain hopeful that we will be able to overcome these challenges posed by COVID-19 and that Great Move-In Day will return next year in 2021. We are deeply sorry about not being able to execute our event and any unfulfilled expectations this may cause.  We hope to see you in the very near future.  If you have any questions, please email Residential Life at ResLife@tntech.edu.

  • CAT Virtual Training Workshop

    The Center for Assessment & Improvement of Learning (CAIL) and the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) are excited to offer a critical-thinking and real-world problem-solving workshop at Tennessee Tech University July 22nd & 23rd  to kick-off our Authentic Assessment Academic Learning Community (ALC). This 2 half-day virtual workshop is based around the Critical-thinking Assessment Test (CAT). The CAT was developed at TNTech with support from the National Science Foundation and is used across the country to support institutional assessment and academic research. During the first half-day workshop, we will introduce the CAT and take a look at the test and see how our TNTech students respond to critical-thinking questions. On the second half-day workshop, we will introduce critical-thinking frameworks used in the CAT, practice the development of interdisciplinary critical-thinking activities, and brainstorm/develop content specific critical-thinking activities (CAT Apps) for your courses.

    The red zone parking lot across from Pennebaker Hall is reserved for orientation and SOAR guests this summer. We ask faculty, staff and students to use other parking zones on campus during orientation programming.

  • General Complaint Reporting – Summer 2020

    In addition to the Fraud, Waste, or Abuse reporting form, Tennessee Tech also has a form on Internal Audit’s website for confidentially reporting complaints about accounting, internal control, auditing matters, code of conduct, and other related issues that are NOT fraud, waste, or abuse.

    Complainants remain COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS to Internal Audit unless the last section of the form is completed with contact information.

    General complaints received on this form are routed to the appropriate campus departments for follow-up. The form can be submitted online or completed, printed, and mailed to Internal Audit, PO Box 5154, Cookeville, TN 38505.

  • John Smith named Interim Associate Vice President of University Development

    John Smith named Interim Associate Vice President of University Development

    John Smith has been named Interim Associate Vice President of University Development.  Smith currently serves as the Executive Director for University Advancement, where he leads the Advancement Services unit (which encompasses financial services, gift and pledge processing, and records and research) and provides strategic vision and coordination for the entire University Advancement division.  In addition to 25 years of experience in relationship building, fundraising, and advancement policy, Smith also serves as a district board member for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Business Administration, both from Tennessee Tech.

    The Associate Vice President for Development provides long-term strategic leadership for the University’s philanthropic needs and day-to-day leadership of the Development Team.  This critical position also serves as a thought partner to the deans and other academic leaders and will assume responsibility of a portfolio of donors and prospective donors.

  • Equestrian Team Service Event

    Four members of the Tennessee Tech Equestrian Team participated as Service Volunteers at the Youth Equestrian Development Association National Finals, held last week at the Tri State Expo in Cleveland, Tennessee. Mackenzie Garmer, Shantini West, Kerri Young and Olivia Abston cleaned/disenfected common areas, ran judges cards to score keepers, sold raffle tickets and programs, and “other duties as assigned”. They were rewarded with cash Volunteer Awards.
