TN Tech’s Cumberland Quintet celebrates 50th season!
Join the Cumberland Quintet, the faculty wind quintet in residence at Tennessee Tech University’s School of Music, on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 P.M. as they celebrate their 50th-anniversary season. The Cumberland Quintet, comprised of flutist Dr. Mary Matthews, oboist Dr. Michael Adduci, clarinetist Dr. Mark J. Cramer, bassoonist Dr. Jeff Womack, and hornist Dr. Greg Danner, will present a program of five works by living composers, featuring three world premieres commissioned for this anniversary concert: Lift Up by Nicole Chamberlain, Interchanging Parts by Tennessee Tech music alum Aaron Hunt, and Les Adieux by Mathieu Lussier. Additional works include Into the Blue, written by Cumberland Quintet member and TTU faculty composer Greg Danner, and Suite for Wind Quintet by Amanda Harberg. The concert is a celebration of the quintet’s rich past, exciting present, and vision for the future.

THE STORY:
“To shred or be shredded? That is the question.” When Nina enters her first air guitar competition, she thinks winning will be easy. But as she befriends a group of charismatic nerds all committed to becoming the next champion, she discovers that there’s more to this art form than playing pretend; it’s about finding yourself in your favorite songs, and performing with raw joy. Will Nina be able to let go and set herself free onstage? Following her mission to shred or be shredded, Airness is an exuberant reminder that everything we need to rock is already inside us. A comedy about competition, completion, and finding the airness inside yourself.

“Make. Do.”
The works in this show have been hidden from the public, like a bird enclosed in an egg. In this season of new beginnings, the artists will reveal their work, and the public is invited to witness the formerly secret made fully visible. Students of Tennessee Tech’s School of Art, Craft & Design will be presenting Make. Do., an exhibition at the Silver Fern in Cookeville, TN. A reception will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., and the show will run April 1–30, 2022. The gallery will be open Thursday and Friday 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. The gallery is open by appointment only on Tuesday and Wednesday. The artists practice in diverse disciplines such as blacksmithing, metalsmithing, ceramics, painting, fibers, graphic design, and photography. Please attend Make. Do. to be surprised by a variety of practices and to be welcomed into the excitement of this season in these emerging artists’ careers.

Budget Office – April Training
Budget Office training sessions for April are now scheduled if anyone is interested! Below is a brief description of each training:
General Budget Training: This training gives a big picture overview of the university budget, Banner screens, and budget revisions. This training is required for signature authority on budget revisions.
Budget Banner Screen Training: This training focuses specifically on the Banner screens frequently used for budgeting purposes. This is an optional training course.
Budget Shadow System Training: This training focuses specifically on our Shadow System Template. This is an optional training course.
Position Control Budget Training: This training focuses specifically on topics related to position control including new position set ups, personnel action forms, budget revisions for permanent positions, how to verify permanent position funding, lapsed salary, etc. This is an optional training course.

EWB & TTU Water Pros Hear from West TN River Basin Authority
Engineers Without Borders and TTU Water Professionals will be hosting their next joint meeting of the semester this Thursday, March 31st during dead hour in Prescott Room 330. We are going to be hearing from David Blackwood. David is an engineer with West TN River Basin Authority and will be speaking about the August 2021 flood in Waverly, TN. We’re having pizza for lunch so be sure to come hungry!
As always, all majors are welcomed and encouraged to join! We can’t wait to see everyone!!

The Office of New Student & Family Programs is preparing for summer orientation programs. If you are responsible for helping coordinate your department or college during orientation and would like to ensure you receive our communications, please email Courtney Brehm (cbrehm@tntech.edu) with the name, email, and department of the person requesting to be added to the orientation distribution list. Additionally, if staffing changes have occurred in your department and you need to remove someone from the list, please let us know as well.

TN Tech Presents Free Screening of Benjamin Franklin by Ken Burns
Eagle Works, in partnership with the WCTE PBS, is excited to present the free screening of Benjamin Franklin: A Film by Ken Burns tomorrow, March 31. The film represents the first part of an engaging documentary series exploring the life and work of Franklin, the world-renowned inventor, innovator, and scientist of American history. All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend this free screening, which will be followed by an enlightening discussion led by Michael Aikens, director of Eagle Works, to consider Franklin’s impact on our nation and the power of innovation and entrepreneurship. The screening will be held in the Stonecipher Lecture Hall Room 126 Wednesday March 31st at 6pm. Let’s engage our campus and community through considering how Ben Franklin used innovation, science, and civic engagement to make his mark on American History. Visit the annual Clothesline Project display from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. & 4 p.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, in the RUC Tech Pride Room. The Clothesline Project supports and bears witness to survivors of interpersonal violence. Those affected by interpersonal violence can visit the Women’s Center during office hours or the Clothesline Project display to create or drop off a shirt to add to the display. Meet the Tech Tomorrow faculty leaders: Jeremy Blair, Engagement for Impact
Jeremy Blair, assistant professor of art education in the School of Art, Craft and Design, has been named the faculty leader for the Tech Tomorrow Engagement for Impact goal.
“I am so excited to serve on the Tech Tomorrow Strategic Planning team,” Blair said. “As the new faculty lead for Engagement for Impact, I look forward to fostering innovative partnerships, developing engaging programs, and building bridges across campus that empower our students and university.
“Tech Tomorrow provides a unique opportunity for me to collaborate across disciplines, explore new directions and infrastructures, and dream without boundaries. Speaking with today’s students and faculty inspires me to serve Tech Tomorrow creatively and reimagine the future of Tennessee Tech.”
He served on the previous Innovation in All We Do working group, as well as on the Rural Reimagined Grand Challenge committee.
The previous leader for this goal was Bedelia Russell, associate professor of nursing instruction in the Whitson-Hester School of Nursing.

Join the Tri-Beta Club in welcoming Be the Match to campus! Be the Match is an organization designed to help the thousands of people diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers and disorders like leukemia and lymphoma. They work in partnership with colleges and universities (like ours!) to raise awareness and help build the database of the National Marrow Donor Program. A cure exists! Center Stage and the Commission on the Status of Women are very excited to present “Medical Misogyny: A Conversation with Maya Dusenbery” on Monday, April 18, 2022 at 7:00 PM in the Derryberry Auditorium. The author will discuss her award-winning book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leaves Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick followed by a Q&A with the audience, reception, and book signing.

About the Author:
Maya Dusenbery is a journalist, editor, and author. Her book Doing Harm was a New York Times Editors’ Choice pick and the winner of the 2019 Minnesota Book Award for general nonfiction. She has been a guest on NPR, Good Morning America, and a variety of podcasts and radio programs to discuss her book, medical misogyny, and reproductive issues. Formerly the editorial director of the feminist blog Feministing.com, Maya has written for publications including the New York Times Magazine, Scientific American, Slate, Mother Jones, and Pacific Standard. She regularly speaks about gender bias in medicine to students, health care providers, patient advocates, and researchers.
