Meet and Greet to follow alum David Nicholas’s presentation Thurs, Apr. 29
A meet-and-greet session for faculty will follow Tech alum David Nicholas’s presentation this Thursday, April 29. The presentation will be at 11 a.m. in Room 113 of the Stonecipher Lecture Hall (SLH), and the meet-and-greet will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Laboratory Science Commons Building, Room 3331. The Office of Research and Economic Development and the Chemical Engineering Department are hosting the event. Nicholas, CEO of Earth Science Laboratories in Rogers, Arkansas, will be discussing ESL’s research and development ventures. ESL has found that a unique chemical composition accounted for many distinctive features of its products and is now the basis of the company’s rapidly growing technology platform. ESL is exploring opportunities for collaborative research as the company sees many opportunities for the chemistry that are outside its founding expertise in water treatment. 2021 Research and Creative Inquiry Day winners available
The 2021 Research and Creative Inquiry event winners are available on the event website (https://www.tntech.edu/research/research-day). This year’s event included 222 abstracts with 205 posters/papers submitted, representing more than 300 current students from 22 schools and departments. We appreciate the patience of the students, research advisors, and judges as we used a digital format again this year.
Also on the event website are the Proceedings with all submitted abstracts, recording of the award ceremony, and two creative media inquiry video projects developed in the Social Problems (SOC 1650) class taught by Ada Haynes, sociology professor.
Many of the posters from the event are available for viewing by the campus community for the remainder of the spring semester.
The Proceedings of Student Research and Creative Inquiry Day, an online journal for those who agreed to their abstract and poster/paper being published, will be compiled in the coming weeks. When it is ready, the link to the journal will be available on the event website.

Water bottle, bamboo utensil set, and silicone storage bag give away- April 27
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be celebrating Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) by giving away FREE 32 oz Nalgene water bottles, bamboo utensil sets, and silicone zip-top storage bags from 11 a.m. until noon (or while supplies last) in the main atrium of LSC. This year’s theme of CCEW is “Reducing our Footprint with Chemistry”. All of these items can be used to replace disposable options which helps to reduce plastic waste. Tennessee Tech ASBMB and WCTE Present Ken Burns, The Gene
The Student Members of the American Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and WCTE invite you to attend a private viewing of the Ken Burns’ Documentary, The Gene, on Monday, April 26, at 7:00 PM. The event will be in Stonecipher Lecture Hall 128, and simultaneously online as well. The documentary discusses the science and history of the human gene and how we can utilize new technologies such as CRISPR to treat and cure diseases and solve the problems of the future.
The video is 45 minutes and will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Derek Cashman (Chemistry), Dr. Carla Hurt (Biology), and Dr. James Gray (retired MD).

Zoe Dennis receives Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award
Zoe Dennis, a senior double major in History and Political Science, is the recipient of the Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award. This is the highest student award given by the Tennessee Tech College of Arts and Sciences. Ms. Dennis is recognized for her excellence in three vital functions of a liberally educated person: (1) critical thinking; (2) context-consciousness; and (3) communication.

Deiter receives CoAS Award for Research and Scholarly Activity
Dr. Kristen Deiter of the Department of English is the recipient of the 2020-2021 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Research and Scholarly Activity. This award recognizes a significant research publication or creative project appearing during the previous two years and receiving expert critical review. Dr. Deiter is recognized for her paper, “Recasting and Refashioning the Tower of London in Milton’s Eikonoklastes and Paradise Lost,” published in the journal The Seventeenth Century in 2020.

Luna receives College of Arts & Sciences Award for Innovative Teaching
Dr. Jeannette Luna of the Department of Earth Sciences is the recipient of the 2020-2021 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Innovative Teaching. This award recognizes a recent significant innovation in undergraduate teaching. Dr. Luna is recognized for her use of Google Earth, Virtual Rocks and Mineral Sets in SketchFab, and ArcGIS Pro. Her curated collections of Google Earth assignments and SketchFab 3D renderings of rocks and minerals enabled courses in Earth Sciences to switch to online lab delivery during the pandemic.

Wear Denim on Wednesday to Raise Awareness!
Join the Women’s Center, Counseling Center, and Project AWAKEN in raising awareness of sexual assault by participating in Denim Day on Wednesday, April 28th! All you have to do is wear denim, share a picture on social media, and tag us for a chance to win a prize!
Why denim? Denim Day was originally triggered in the late 90s when a teenager who was sexually assaulted by her driver’s training instructor was blamed for her assault since she was wearing tight jeans. Denim Day started internationally in response to this case; wearing jeans annually on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

The TN Tech Counseling Center will host Tea and T-shirts in the RUC lobby on Thursday, April 29 from 10:00am-2:00pm. This de-stress interactive tabling event will include Tea and T-shirt give-a-ways. Game Dev Club Guest Speaker – Jordan Magnuson
The Game Dev Club is pleased to announce that Jordan Magnuson will be speaking with us! Jordan Magnuson is a game designer, known for games such games as “Loneliness” and “Freedom Bridge,” and founded the influential indie developer forum TIGSource. He holds an MFA in Digital Art & New Media from the University of California Santa Cruz. Jordan will be joining us on April 29th at 11:00am, at Clement Hall 212. Students may also attend via Zoom. Senior Thesis Exhibition by Tabitha Thierjung opens April 22 at Appalachian Center for Craft
Tabitha Thierjung will present “Going Through Spells,” taking place at the Appalachian Center for Craft in the Joe L. Evins Gallery on April 22 – May 3, 2021.
Going Through Spells will feature blown, sculpted, and fused glass pieces hand crafted by Tabitha. Take a moment to come by and join Tabitha on a journey to find magic in the mundane.
Due to the current restrictions with COVID-19, there will not be an opening reception. The gallery will be open Monday – Saturday, 10 – 5 a.m. and Sunday 12 – 5 p.m.
