Retirement Reception for David Crouse and Gene Mullins- Friday, April 29
The Department of Chemistry will be hosting a retirement reception for two members of our department. Dr. David Crouse, assistant professor of chemistry, has served 42 years as a faculty member. Gene Mullins has served seventeen years as the department’s lab coordinator. The reception will be on the LSC portico on Friday, April 29 from 4-5:30 p.m. (In case of bad weather the reception will be moved to the north LSC atrium) The campus community is invited to help us celebrate the wonderful careers of these two exceptional individuals. Gene Mullins “Last Lecture” Friday, April 29
The Department of Chemistry invites to you celebrate the outstanding career of Gene Mullins. Gene has served as the department’s Lab Coordinator from 2005-2022. He will be giving his last lecture “It’s Not Easy Being Gene” on Friday, April 29 at 3 p.m. in LSC 1211. We invite the campus community to come wish Gene best as he goes into retirement. Gene has made a huge impact of the chemistry department, as well as assisted several other departments over the years. He was instrumental in the transition to LSC. The Professional Readiness and Leadership Center in the College of Business wishes to recognize this year’s winners of the Career Ready Advocate Award. This award is given to the faculty, staff, and campus community members who have had an impact in the development of young professionals. The faculty award for 2022 goes to Joohun “Justin” Lee of the Economics, Finance, and Marketing Department. The staff award for 2022 goes to Sherrie Cannon of the College of Business Student Success Center. As for the campus community award, Emma Cannon from First National Bank of Tennessee is recognized. Congratulations to these excellent leaders!

iLearn Semester Wrap-Up
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning on Tuesday, April 26th at 11 am for a workshop session focused on preparing your iLearn courses for the next semester. In this session, Kelvin and Lauren will discuss the exact procedures for adding, deleting, and modifying content topics, quizzes, assignments, discussions, and other iLearn components. The process of copying, exporting, and importing entire courses and between semesters is also explained in detail. Lastly, they will elaborates on the steps for selecting specific items to be copied as well as how to manage or offset start, end, and due dates. Rebecca Firth Receives Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award
Rebecca Firth, a senior pursuing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Astronomy, is the recipient of the 2022 Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award. This is the highest student award given by the Tennessee Tech College of Arts and Sciences. Rebecca is recognized for her chemistry research and service to the American Chemistry Society though various leadership and outreach roles. Rebecca joined Dr. Gichuhi’s research team as a sophomore. She has presented research on negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy of deprotonated benzonitrile at the regional and state levels. Working with Dr. Gichuhi, Rebecca is planning to submit her Benzonitrile work to the American Chemistry Society’s Journal of Chemical Information and Modelling. According to Dr. Gichuhi, “this level of research productivity by an undergraduate student, especially in the area of physical chemistry, is not only extraordinary, but a clear indication of how intelligent, dedicated and talented Rebecca is.”

Wear Denim Day 2022
The Denim Day campaign began as an international protest of a Court decision to overturn a rape conviction. The Italian Supreme Court dismissed charges against a rape suspect because his victim was wearing jeans at the time of the attack. The Head Judge argued, “Because the victim wore very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them… and by removing the jeans… it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” This sparked a worldwide outcry from those who understand coercion, threats and violence go along with the act of rape. 2022 Orientation Overview Meetings
The Office of New Student & Family Programs will be hosting open orientation overview meetings today (4/25) and tomorrow (4/26). These meetings will review information about the SOAR & Transfer Orientation programs for this summer.
We strongly encourage attending one of these meetings if you coordinate orientation efforts for your department/unit, you are new to your department/unit, or you feel that you need a refresher about the university’s orientation programs. Both meetings will cover the same information, so you can choose which date/time fits your schedule best!

Slalom Information Sessions are Monday, April 25
Join Slalom Consulting, a global consulting organization in Nashville, for one of two information sessions being held on Monday, April 25, in the Tech Pride Room. The first session will last from 1:00 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. and the second will begin at 2:00 p.m. and end at 2:55 p.m.
Slalom is a modern consulting firm focused on strategy, technology, and business transformation. In 41 markets around the world, Slalom’s teams have autonomy to move fast and do what’s right.
Slalom will be discussing opportunities to join their global consulting organization, including a consulting development program called the Cloud Residency. This is an entry-level position in Nashville for Computer and Information Systems and Technology related majors.

Apply for Washington, D.C., Congressional Internship
The Department of Sociology and Political Science announces an internship opportunity coordinated with Congressman John Rose (TN-06). Rose has internships this summer for Tech students who desire to work in his Washington, D.C. congressional office.
This full-time internship is paid a stipend of $1,800 per month and will begin by the end of May.
Resumes are due as soon as possible and review of resumes and interviews will begin immediately. Internship offers will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you are interested in this opportunity, please act quickly!
