    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Austin Marler, TTU Mechanical Engineering

    This week’s (virtual) Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will feature Electrical Engineering major Austin Marler. Austin spent the summer working on an exciting new beam line facility being developed by physics professor Dr. Rajabali here at TTU. In his talk TTU Ion Generator Development, Austin will describe his research directed at reconfiguring an existing cesium sputtering source into a laser ablation source. The seminar will be this Friday, October 16th at 4pm. It is geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!   • TBR to fund projects for low-cost or free educational materials

    The Office of Research wants to remind you of the TBR “Open Educational Resources and Low Costs/No Costs Educational Support Materials” funding opportunity.  The deadline is Nov. 1, with funds available for Spring 2021. These grants target digital education initiatives and creation of educational support materials that are low, or no, cost to undergraduate and/or graduate students in new or existing campus services or programs to increase equity in access among historically underserved student populations, including, but not limited to, students of color, low income students, adults, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and traditionally underrepresented genders. Projects should involve collaborations across departments to ensure an institutional approach. Please complete the internal Notice of Intent to Submit Proposal form if you are planning to apply.   • National Chemistry Week Oct. 18 – 24

    The Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) invite you to join us in celebrating National Chemistry Week (NCW) next week. The theme this year is “Sticking with Chemistry” and focuses on glues and adhesives. The goal of NCW is to educate people about how chemistry impacts their lives and promotes the value of chemistry in everyday life. We have several events planned throughout the week that we invite the campus and general community to participate in: Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. we will be giving away take home activity bags in the STEM center lobby; Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Foster 233 undergraduate Rebecca Firth will be giving a presentation over Green Chemistry and Pollution Prevention; Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 5-7 p.m. we will paint pumpkins and have hot cider in Foster 406; Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. in Foster 233 we will show the webinar “Strange Tales from the Periodic Table: the Disappearing Spoon”, and Friday, Oct. 23 we will host a spirit night at Panda Express from 4-8 p.m. Make sure to check Tech Times next week for more details on all of these fun events.     Tuesday, 10/20, Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image virtual film screening

    Join the Women’s Center for a virtual screening of Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image, a ninety-minute film followed by a short discussion. Straight/Curve examines the industries and social obstacles responsible for the current body image crisis and showcases the dynamic leaders working for better representation of diversity in size, race, and age.     General Complaint Reporting

    In addition to the Fraud, Waste, or Abuse reporting form, Tennessee Tech also has a form on Internal Audit’s website for confidentially reporting complaints about accounting, internal control, auditing matters, code of conduct, and other related issues that are NOT fraud, waste, or abuse. Complainants remain COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS to Internal Audit unless the last section of the form is completed. General complaints received on this form are routed to appropriate campus departments for follow-up.

    The form can be submitted online or completed, printed, and mailed to Internal Audit, PO Box 5154, Cookeville, TN 38505.

    The Holistic FUEL Program is Recruiting 30 Hispanic/Latinx Engineering Students

    The Holistic FUEL program is recruiting 30 Hispanic/Latinx undergraduate freshmen and sophomore engineering majors interested in participating in impactful research. FUEL students will collaborate in student-team research projects geared towards positively affecting the Upper Cumberland region. Students will start in Spring 2021 and can also earn a $600 stipend!     El Holistic FUEL: Está Focalizado en Reclutar 30 Estudiantes de Ingeniería

    El programa de “Holistic FUEL” está focalizado en reclutar 30 estudiantes de primer y segundo año cursando las carreras de ingeniería. Estudiantes Hispan@s/Latinx que estén interesados en participar en investigación académica enfocada en temas socialmente relevantes están especialmente invitados. En el programa van a trabajar en proyectos que son en colaboración con la iniciativa de “Rural Reimagined” y que serán beneficiosos para la región del “Upper Cumberland” en Tennessee. El programa comenzará en la primavera del año 2021 y ofrecerá una beca de $600.
