Center Stage and the Commission on the Status of Women are very excited to present “Medical Misogyny: A Conversation with Maya Dusenbery” on Monday, April 18, 2022 at 7:00 PM in the Derryberry Auditorium. The author will discuss her award-winning book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leaves Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick followed by a Q&A with the audience and reception.

About the Author:
Maya Dusenbery is a journalist, editor, and author. Her book Doing Harm was a New York Times Editors’ Choice pick and the winner of the 2019 Minnesota Book Award for general nonfiction. She has been a guest on NPR, Good Morning America, and a variety of podcasts and radio programs to discuss her book, medical misogyny, and reproductive issues. Formerly the editorial director of the feminist blog Feministing.com, Maya has written for publications including the New York Times Magazine, Scientific American, Slate, Mother Jones, and Pacific Standard. She regularly speaks about gender bias in medicine to students, health care providers, patient advocates, and researchers.

Gold/Purple Career Readiness Deadline on Apr. 18
Monday, Apr. 18, is the FINAL DAY to submit your Career Readiness Application for the Spring 2022 semester. All materials for Gold and Purple Career Readiness Applications must be turned in-person to the Center for Career Development (RUC 328), via email to career@tntech.edu, or online at https://www.tntech.edu/career/students/career-ready.php by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 18.
Substitutions or late submissions will not be accepted.

The Late Prof. Michael E. Birdwell Named 2022 Outstanding Diversity Advocate
Tech’s Commission on the Status of Blacks recognized Professor Michael E. Birdwell, as the 2022 Outstanding Diversity Advocate for his broad contributions to researching, preserving and chronicling African American history. Prof. Birdwell was featured in the PBS documentary, “Everybody’s Welcome at John’s Place,” which displayed his oral history skills, story-telling prowess and broad knowledge about the historically-black West End area of Cookeville, in which John’s Place served an integrated clientele prior to desegregation. Along with local residents, Prof. Birdwell worked to get John’s Place listed on the National Historic Register and, at the time of his death, was working to register the entire neighborhood. Speaking about his work, one West Ender explained: “These families were not just subjects or topics of discussion for him. He knew these families individually and felt…each story was important and worthy of being studied and discussed.” His legacy stands. (Photo: A. Banton)

Meet the Tech Tomorrow faculty leaders: Lenly Weathers, Education for Life
Lenly Weathers, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering, has been named the faculty leader for the Tech Tomorrow Education for Life goal.
“As the team leader for Education for Life, I am eager to reach out to students, faculty, staff and administrators to promote the priorities under this facet of Tech Tomorrow by improving current practices or creating new ones,” Weathers said. “This will mean continuing to evolve a Tech-unique general education curriculum to provide the foundation for technologically adept, analytically capable, career-ready graduates. Expanding the diversity of our student population is also a priority of Education for Life, as is the related goal of developing each student’s global awareness in our increasingly interconnected, global society.”
The previous leader for this goal was Ed Lisic, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Partial Road Closure/10th and Stadium
The contractor on the new Ashraf Islam Engineering Building will need to close part of the street at the corner of 10th and Stadium. If there are no issues this will hopefully only occur on Wednesday, April 13. Thank you for your patience with our new building project!

The Office of New Student & Family Programs announces Courtney Brehm as Director
The Office of New Student & Family Programs is pleased to announce that on April 1, Courtney Brehm assumed the role of Director. In this role, Courtney will continue to oversee the university’s new student orientation programs, as well as family and first-year programs. Courtney started her career at Tennessee Tech in 2016 and has worked in various roles within New Student & Family Programs, including Coordinator (2016-2018) and Assistant Director (2018-2022).

The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be hosting a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR) in STEM Industry panel at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12. You can attend in person in LSC 1211, or virtually through Zoom. We have four panelists that are chemists or engineers in industry that will share their stories and how DEIR issues and practices impact their jobs and lives. Nominations are now being accepted for the Tech Togetherness Awards sponsored by the Office of the Provost. The goal of Tech Togetherness is to bridge the gaps and create stronger relationships across administrators, faculty, staff, and the Tech community at large. As we wrap up another academic year, we want to acknowledge those who have helped us remain together in spirit and who have embodied the Wings Up Way.

Support GA taxable amount
The Office of Graduate Studies is now sending a listing of the Support GA tuition benefits paid each semester on their behalf to the Payroll/Business Office. The Spring 2022 portion will be added to the taxable income on the April 29th paycheck. This will increase the tax liability and possibly the federal income tax deduction. This amount does not increase your net pay. If you have any questions feel free to contact Dustin Agee in Payroll at 931-372-3041.
Here is an explanation of how the IRS treats assistantships:
Tuition benefits offered to graduate assistants are generally excluded from taxable income under section 117(d) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, section 117(d) only excludes from taxable income tuition benefits for graduate students who are engaged in teaching activities or research activities at the University. Graduate assistants not engaged in such teaching or research activities at the University cannot be excluded from taxable income under section 117(d). These assistantships do not qualify for the $5,250 exclusion. -
