Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Carson Alfaro and Jack Seger
The Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this Friday will feature Carson Alfaro (TTU Mathematics/Physics/Mechanical Engineering) and Jack Seger (TTU Physics/Mathematics). Carson’s talk will describe his work designing A SiPM-Based Ultracold Neutron Depolarization Monitor, and Jack will describe his work Coupling a Quadrupole Beam Deflector to a Laser Ablation Ion Source at the TN Tech Ion Beam Lab. The seminar will be at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210, with snacks served starting at 3:30pm. These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!

Tech students earn U.S. patent for cybersecurity innovation
Sometimes a master’s thesis turns into something much bigger – like a U.S. patent.
That’s what happened for Tennessee Tech computer science Ph.D. student Bradley Northern, whose research laid the groundwork for a new cybersecurity innovation now recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Northern, along with fellow Ph.D. students Trey Burks and Marlana Hatcher and faculty advisors Michael Rogers, Ph.D., and Denis Ulybyshev, Ph.D., (formerly of Tennessee Tech), filed for the patent in January 2023 and received approval in September.
“Our invention focuses on vulnerability and risk management in cybersecurity, particularly in modifying a user’s system based on publicly known vulnerabilities,” Northern said.

NSF NRT-GCR, AI Graduate Fellowship — Spring 2026 Applications Open
The NSF NRT-GCR, AI: Traineeship in the Convergence of AI, Energy, and Cybersecurity is accepting M.S. applications for ECE, CSC, and ME students for the Spring 2026 semester.
Fellowships include tuition, fees, and an annual stipend of $34,000, with the possibility of up to 15 months of support, contingent upon successful progress in coursework and program activities and the availability of funds. Please contact jcwilliams@tntech.edu with any questions!
