Congratulations to PI Mr. Carlos Galindo (STEM Center) and Co-PIs Dr. Andrea Arce-Trigatti (College of Education) and Dr. Stephanie Jorgensen (Chemical Engineering) for being awarded the Science Olympiad Collegiate Scholars (SOCS) program grant of $50,000. The SERS-funded SOCS program will go through the Oakley STEM Center and will target underrepresented and minority student populations in the STEM fields. The program will recruit 20 undergraduate and 10 graduate students who represent these characteristics and who will gain skills that positively impact both their academic success and the communities they serve while working towards the goal of coordinating next year’s Regional Science Olympiad. Mr. Galindo states, “I am personally really excited to be able to work with students to develop their professional skills while at the same time working on a project that can positively impact k-12 students in the Upper Cumberland.” Wings up!

TCRI Receives $300,000 CARES Act Grant
The Center for Rural Innovation (TCRI) has received a $300,000 CARES Act grant through the federal Economic Development Administration (EDA). The grant will establish the TCRI CARES project, which will respond to economic injury as a result of coronavirus in the rural Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. The project will help 200 local businesses, create 20 student internships, broadcast 50 interactive community Zoom calls, and produce a monthly PBS television series. “This project will help our region’s entrepreneurs survive and thrive throughout the pandemic and beyond through a comprehensive approach to technical assistance, commercialization, applied research, and workforce development,” said Michael Aikens, the TCRI CARES director and PI. Great Move In Day 2020 Volunteering Canceled
Greetings:
It is with deepest regret that we must announce the cancellation of volunteers for Great Move-In Day 2020.
We enjoyed an excellent response from our university faculty and student organizations in last year’s annual event. We were prepared for a normal academic year and were excited about the enthusiastic responses from the Tech community, including a potential record breaking volunteer number. However, given the severity of the coronavirus pandemic and out of concern for our students, their families, staff, and faculty, we made the difficult decision to limit the volume of individuals gathering during the move-in process. Our department worked hard to be proactive in addressing these challenges and in brainstorming collaborative solutions. But, with the coronavirus numbers on the rise again, we made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the volunteer portion of Great Move-In Day.
Again, we are appreciative of our faculty and Tennessee Tech student organizations for such an enthusiastic response to our request for volunteers. We remain hopeful that we will be able to overcome these challenges posed by COVID-19 and that Great Move-In Day will return next year in 2021. We are deeply sorry about not being able to execute our event and any unfulfilled expectations this may cause. We hope to see you in the very near future. Join us for a virtual recruiting event via Zoom with Huntsville employers! ASmartPlace on the Road to Tennessee Tech is a virtual meet and greet connecting students with employers. ASmartPlace representative Katelyn Sides Baker will speak about what it is like to live, work, & play in the Rocket City. Afterwards, 15-20 Huntsville employers will speak to you about their company and what roles they are seeking to fill.
Employers are seeking individuals for internships, co-op’s and even full-time positions. Students that attend the virtual session will be given a sheet at the end of the event with contact information for each of the participating employers.

Five May 2020 TN Tech Graduates Earn the I&E Certificate
Congratulations to students Jordan Barnett (Nursing, Erin Guenther (Nursing), Shelley Edwards (Chemical Engineering), Cody Bowerman (Chemical Engineering), and Amy Tribble (Nursing) for earning the Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Certificate. The I&E certificate is an interdisciplinary program of study focused on providing each student with the opportunity to develop innovation and entrepreneurship skills through problem solving, creativity, working with a team, and practicing effective strategies for meeting needs within the increasingly competitive global marketplace. Rural Reimagined Center Spotlight: The Oakley STEM Center
The STEM Center’s mission continues to directly align with Rural Reimagined, as they successfully provide our rural communities with access to STEM education through their lending library, field trips, the Science & Engineering Fair, the STEMobile, educator workshops, and outreach events; and, they continue to provide interactive activities during challenging times of remote learning. Director Darek Potter states, “As a STEM infused university, it is essential that we continue to provide access to high quality learning experiences for students in our regional communities.
