Faculty Success Story: Dr. Arce Receives OChE Award

Rural Reimagined (RR) congratulates Dr. Pedro Arce on receiving the 2021 Outstanding Chemical Engineer Alum Award (OChE) at Purdue University for his work in engineering education and “his forward-thinking approach to developing an interdisciplinary model defining the ‘new’ engineer.” He has worked alongside RR on many projects and collaborations and was recognized recently for his work promoting a new type of professional engineer – one that is holistic, innovative, socially impactful, and with an entrepreneur mindset. “Engineering is not only about formulae, experimental labs and practice, it also involves the understanding of social issues and entrepreneurship to become impactful in helping communities with their challenges.”

Rural Reimagined is excited to continue its partnership with Dr. Arce, the Chemical Engineering Department, and the engineers that will graduate and hopefully serve our surrounding rural areas. Wings up!

Landscape Workshop’s paid internship program will provide students with training in a wide array of departments including maintenance, enhancements, irrigation, seasonal color, and business development. Interns will work directly in the field at one of their branch locations under the guidance of a seasoned mentor for 8-12 weeks. Landscape Workshop will also be recruiting for their full-time field manager positions.

Have you ever wondered why you can have a good cup of coffee one day but not the next? Join the Student Members of the American Chemical Society as we host the webinar “Coffee: A Chemical and Physical Perspective” on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in LSC 1211. Christopher Hendon of the University or Oregon will discuss how he uses chemistry and physics to isolate the most impactful variables in the reproduction of cup quality, while optimizing the usage of coffee to maximize profitability and flavor. We will serve coffee, hot cocoa, and warm apple cider and snacks. You’re encouraged to bring your own cup to reduce waste, but we will have cups available if you need one. Join the Center for Career Development on Tuesday, Oct. 19, beginning at 11 a.m. in Clement Hall 212 for the first Gold Career Readiness Workshop of the semester! A staff member from the Center for Career Development will be describing the characteristics of a strong, foundational resume.

This event is open to all students in all majors and counts towards the Gold Career Readiness Certificate for freshman and sophomore students. Bring your Eagle Card for a quick sign-in.

Community and Student Spotlight: Putnam Proud Clean-Up Event

Rural Reimagined recognizes the Tennessee Tech Office of Sustainability for their annual Putnam Proud Clean-up Event. A total of 70 Tech students participated in the clean-up that took place in several different areas of the county including roadsides, bike trails, and parts of campus. Student groups that participated include African Student Union, Student Members of American Chemical Society, Student Government Association, and the Office of Sustainability. A few other student groups plan to participate in a clean-up soon as well. The Office of Sustainability gave out supplies to all groups, and the Clean Commission gave out t-shirts to all who participated. Lydia Young, a student worker in the Office of Sustainability, stated “We look forward to this event every year and love getting to show our appreciation towards Putnam County!”  It was a very successful week of cleaning up Putnam County. Wings up!

You are invited to a presentation on Green Chemistry given by Chance Morris, chemistry major and Green Chemistry chair for the Student Members of the American Chemical Society. The presentation will be Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in LSC 1211. Chance will discuss the twelve principles of Green Chemistry and how it relates to more sustainable practices. No prior knowledge of chemistry is needed and the event is free and open to all ages. Questions can be sent to smacsttu@gmail.com.

The Student Members of the American Chemical Society invite you to kick off National Chemistry Week (Oct 17-23) with our Mole Day Race on Monday, Oct. 18 from 5-7 p.m. at the Tucker Stadium track. A mole is an important unit in chemistry that helps count large number of particles (6.022×10^23 to be exact!). Help us celebrate by running or walking a mole of zeptometers (602 meters). This event is open to all ages and is free. The event will not take place if it rains. Questions can be sent to smacsttu@gmail.com.
