“Come September”:  Matdeline Phillips Senior Thesis Exhibition

Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fibers

From April 4-16 the Appalachian Center for Craft will be showing Come September, a solo exhibition by Matdeline Phillips.  The work will be displayed in the Hilltop Gallery, Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 12–5 p.m., reception on April 14 from 12-3 p.m.

Come September, is showcases Matdeline’s work from the past year as she worked her way through her senior year. The work showcases a variety of hand dyed materials, quilted into an array of pieces, that seem to shower an assortment of marine life onto the viewer.

Gallery talk and reception for artist Lisa Turner, Thursday, March 21, 5:00 p.m. in the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery in the Roaden University Center.  Hear the artist share her thoughts, inspirations and techniques involved in her body of work, Bodily Impressions, which features a variety of printmaking techniques.

Join us at the Celebration of Craft on Saturday, April 6 from 10am to 5pm at the Appalachian Center for Craft. This free public event features live jazz, bluegrass and string quartet music, kids’ activities, food trucks, a silent auction and craft sales. In addition, studios will be open to the public, offering demonstrations in blacksmithing, metals, glass, clay, wood and fiber. Center Stage welcomes poet Jayme Ringleb to campus for two events on March 21. They will read from their acclaimed poetry collection, So Tall it Ends in Heaven, called “an intimate, assured debut” by the New York Times, at 7 p.m. at the Backdoor Playhouse. This event is free and open to the public. Earlier in the day, they will give a talk about creative writing called “Poetics of the Trigger: How Can Poetry Address Pain Without Reproducing It?” This talk is open to all students and takes place at 11 a.m. in Henderson Hall 304B. The recital will feature guests Andrew Uhe, violin, Yu-Han Kuan, piano, and Tech Professor Emeritus Greg Danner, horn. The group will perform works by Brahms, Beach, Glazunov, Gliere and Ravel in Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building. The duo will perform works for saxophone and piano by Fazil Say, Takashi Yoshimatsu and Chick Corea in Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building. Described by noted American composer Libby Larsen as “fearless on stage,” saxophonist Stephen Page has garnered international prominence as one of the leading saxophonists of today’s younger generation. Dr. Page has appeared across four continents, in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada and across the United States. The Chinkapin Craftstead will present “I Am My Own Wife”, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Doug Wright March 7-9 at the Backdoor Playhouse.  It tells the true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorff, a trans woman who lived through and survived both the Nazi and the Communist regimes in Germany. The production will feature eight actors playing 34 characters. It explores with humor and tenderness the nature of resilience, personal truths and the stories we tell about ourselves. Please join us for Trumpet Day on Saturday, March 23rd from 10am – 5pm. This year’s featured guest artist is the world famous trumpeter, Caleb Hudson, who toured with the Canadian Brass and is currently the trumpet professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Registration is free for all TnTech students, faculty, and staff. Registration is $15 for non-TTU folks, and that includes access to all events, lunch, and a swag bag.
