WEST, the Writing Excellence Studio at Tech, is here to help! On Thursday, 2/15, we will be leading a dead hour workshop on writing annotated bibliographies. We can talk about the genre and discuss specific concerns you might have. The workshop will be in Henderson Hall 216A, from 11:00-11:50. Due to the recent university closure, we’re extending the call for QEP topic mini-proposals to February 9. Proposals should align with Tech’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, Tech Tomorrow, integrate current institutional data, and address the QEP topic survey results.

All proposals will be assessed by the QEP Topic Selection Committee using the rubric in the announcement. The top three proposals will be selected for potential further development. Authors of selected proposals receive monetary honoraria, as detailed in the announcement.

History faculty members, Dr. Allen Driggers and Dr. Laura Smith and their student, Cheyenne Douthitt, recently had their research, “History, politics, and variolation vaccination hesitancy in the American South during the American Civil War,” published in Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings.

In their article, the researchers examine how the history of vaccination in the Civil War reveals lessons about why citizens resisted vaccination and how physicians tried to respond to the problems associated with combating epidemic diseases like smallpox.

The Tennessee Tech chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won an Outstanding Chapter Award from the SPS National Office. The chapter has been recognized for its excellence as a top-tier student-led physical sciences organization, a designation given to fewer than 10 percent of all SPS chapters at colleges and universities in the world.

Tennessee Tech’s SPS chapter is advised by Professor Adam Holley and is led by student officers. The 2022-2023 officers are Mateo Cacheiro, Ethan White and Michael Potts (physics majors), and Emma Krebs (math major).

Dr. Holley stated, “This recognition is a high honor for Tennessee Tech University and for science achievement at the higher education level in Tennessee!”
