Learn practical tips to help you fall asleep faster and wake up feeling refreshed. The workshop will also explore how cannabis can disrupt sleep quality over time.

“Barney (The Beagle)” a coloured pencil piece by astrophysics and applied mathematics student Carla René has been chosen as the cover for the issue 9 edition of The Iris Review. That publication date is May 3rd.
Her self-portrait, “Carla René-#WomanInSTEM” has also been accepted for publication.
Carla is a member of Art ‘Round Tennessee and this past August was honoured by the Coloured Pencil Society of America with her coveted Signature Status, allowing her to display CPSA after her name. She paints in hyperrealism (what the camera sees), hyperrealism (more than the camera sees), and her own watercolour effect she invented.

Troy Wilson is the new annual giving coordinator for Tennessee Tech Athletics. Troy will support Tech’s 14 school-sponsored programs by increasing annual giving and managing the new Champions Clubs for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball.
Troy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the University of Tennessee Knoxville where he worked his way through the Tennessee Fund Development team including positions as a development student intern, development assistant for internal operations, major gifts assistant and development assistant for the annual fund. During his nearly three years there, the Tennessee Fund reported record-breaking years in athletics revenue, gifts closed and total donor count — culminating in more than $300 million in revenue and more than 300 major gifts closed of $25,000+ in FY25.
Troy holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation and sport management from UT Knoxville.
Join the Appalachian Center for Craft for a screenprinted transfers for clay workshop May 22-24. In this weekend workshop, students will explore screenprinting with photo-emulsion to create transfers for wet clay before bisque firing. Participants will design patterns, images, or motifs, print them onto newsprint with Amaco Ceramic Printing Ink, and transfer them onto tiles or slabs. The class will include demonstrations on making templates for specific forms and vessels, as well as time to experiment with decoration slip and practice the transfer process. Students will leave with extra newsprint sheets and the skills to continue creating clay transfers on their own.

Join the Appalachian Center for Craft for a china painting workshop on May 16. In this daylong workshop, students will experience the centuries-old art of china painting. Also known as enameling, this technique involves applying ceramic pigment to an already fired surface. Participants will be provided ready-made ceramic objects to decorate in class and may pick them up the following week. The workshop covers brush techniques and guidance on creating detailed designs, making it perfect for both beginners and those looking to refine their decorative painting skills

John W. Smith, a longtime leader in Tennessee Tech’s Division of University Advancement, has been named interim vice president for University Advancement.
A two-time Tech graduate, Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and an MBA. He began his career in University Advancement in 1995 and assumed leadership of Advancement Services in 2014. He was named interim associate vice president of University Development in 2020 before being appointed to the role full-time in 2021.
In recognition of his impact on colleagues and the profession, Smith was named 2021 Mentor of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III.
Most recently, as AVP, Smith provided both strategic leadership for the university’s philanthropic initiatives and day-to-day guidance for the development team, while also maintaining a portfolio of donors and serving as a key partner to campus leaders.
