Rural Reimagined to Provide $150,000 in Faculty Funding Support
Rural Reimagined is excited to announce that it will be granting over $150,000 to TN Tech faculty members to help support rural-related projects! Involving faculty in the efforts to serve our rural communities perpetuates generations of impact as it educates and inspires their students to do the same. Regarding the importance of partnering with TTU faculty, Grand Challenge Committee faculty chair Dr. Jeff Boles states, “Faculty-led projects that examine and propose solutions to challenges in rural communities provide students an additional educational experience, one that also has the potential to culturally enrich their lives. Involvement in TTU’s Grand Challenge helps create the Tech of tomorrow.” Currently, Rural Reimagined is developing an application and peer reviewed proposal process. If you are a TTU faculty member that would like to be considered a recipient, please expect another announcement via Tech Times for our application. We are excited to hear about your vision for our rural communities and continue our mission through you!

Putnam Proud Clean Up
Join Engineers Without Borders and TTU Water Professionals as we participate in the 2022 Putnam Proud Clean Up hosted by the Putnam County Clean Commission! We will be cleaning up Ensor Sink Natural Area on Saturday September 24, 2022 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. If you would like to participate please email us @ TTU.EWB@gmail. com.
Participants will need sign a safety waiver and be sure to wear close-toed shoes & clothes you don’t find getting dirty. We participate in this event every year and would love the have our biggest crowd yet! As always anyone of any major is more than welcome to attend.

Seminar about new machine learning research consulting service Sept. 22
Tennessee Tech’s College of Engineering is now offering a consulting service for campus departments in need of machine learning research guidance.
An informational seminar will be held Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. at Bruner Hall 228.
“I’m truly excited about this,” said computer science Ph.D. student Katie Brown, who has taken on the role of machine learning research consultant. “I’m getting to learn what other people are doing across campus with machine learning. I get to mentor and help.”

Computer science professor William Eberle said the need for the machine learning research consulting service arose from the numerous requests for assistance that came to the computer science department from throughout the university.
“We’ve been fielding questions for a while from students and faculty who have needed help with machine learning, data mining, AI and high-level umbrella tasks,” he said.
“Katie is here to help with research efforts going on in the university – that’s the primary focus. Faculty members can come and talk to her, and students who are working with faculty members can come and talk to her.”

Child Life Student Receives Volunteer Award
This year’s Frist Humanitarian Award Volunteer
winner is Hanna Lewis. Hanna is a Child Life
Volunteer at TriStar Centennial Women’s and
Children’s Hospital. For the last two years, she has
extended her vibrant spirit and compassion to
patients and families through the hospital. Hanna
began volunteering at the start of the COVID
pandemic. She organized the first Teddy Bear Clinic,
participated in holiday parades outside the hospital,
and added valuable content to our YouTube channel
to provide activities for the children. A very special
story I wish to share is a patient missed an important
football game due to treatment. Hanna immediately
sprang into action. She coordinated three Titans
football players to spend the day with this patient to
support him and give him a wonderful day. Thank you
Hanna for caring for our patients with passion and
dedication. We are honored you choose to volunteer
here at Centennial. Congratulations for being our
2022 Frist Humanitarian Award Volunteer Winner. -
Students Voices Needed for Panel
Today’s students increasingly face challenges to their learning, including mental pressure, financial burdens, and visible and invisible disabilities, which disrupt the traditional role of the student. What should faculty know about students in their classroom? How can we solve the common disconnect between teachers and students?
The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) is seeking 5-6 students to share their thoughts with faculty during a CITL session held on Microsoft Teams Tuesday, October 4 from 11:00-11:45am. If you would like to participate with a panel of peers to discuss your relationships with teachers and what can be done to improve it, please fill out this survey.
