Upper Cumberland Regional Science and Engineering Fair: Volunteers Needed
Looking for Volunteers: Judges
The Oakley STEM Center is very excited to host the 65th Regional Science and Engineering fair on April 3rd, 2020. This year, we are already expecting over 200 students in the Senior division (9-12th grade) and will be hosting a middle school division with close to 100 students from our region. We are currently recruiting judges to help us that day, with faculty judging our senior division and students judging the middle school division. This is a great way for some of the Upper Cumberland’s best math, science, and engineering students to meet and interact with University students and faculty.
Science Fair judging will be held in the Hyder Burks Agriculture Pavilion from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 3, 2020. Coffee and pastries will be served before judging begins.

T-shirt sales March 10-12
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society have rescheduled t-shirts sales for March 10-12 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the second floor of Foster Hall. This year’s shirt is the “Chemistry Eagle” shirt and is $15. We have limited stock of last year’s “two moles per liter” shirt that is $10. You can buy both shirts for $20. The “Chemistry Eagle” shirt is made on a soft style cotton shirt in heathered purple and the “two moles per liter” shirt is cotton in dark purple. We accept cash and cards. All funds raised go to supporting conference travel for students to present research and chapter outreach activites. Questions can be sent to acarroll@tntech.edu.

Northwestern Mutual at Society for the Advancement of Finance and Economics
Join SAFE at our March 12 meeting as we host representatives from Northwestern Mutual, a financial services mutual organization that focuses in areas ranging from life insurance to finance planning. Northwestern Mutual is also home to one of the top internships in the nation, and they are currently filling spots for summer 2020.
The meeting will be held in Johnson 310 during dead hour (11a.m.-12p.m.) on Thursday, March 12. Lunch will be provided.

Did you accept a co-op position at the Engineering Fair last week or accept an internship requiring you to enroll in the Cooperative Education Program, such as the Disney College Program?
Do not miss your last opportunity to learn the process needed for enrollment and to ensure you are meeting all eligibility requirements. All students entering the Cooperative Education Program must meet the eligibility requirements, prior to being enrolled by the Cooperative Education Office:

- Have a minimum overall 2.0 GPA (GPA must be maintained while participating in the program)

- Be in good academic standing

- Must have completed two grading cycles at the university

- Pre-registration will be required for students entering the program after July 1, 2019

- Must complete the Gold (freshman/sophomore) or Purple (junior/senior/gradate) Career Readiness Certification Program

- Complete a Co-op Orientation appointment through Career Development

- Maintain enrollment in the appropriate co-op course throughout the entire co-op assignment,
including summer semesters

TAB Spring Break Bundle Giveaway
The Tech Activities Board will be giving away Spring Break Bundles on Tues. Mar. 10th during dead hour at 11 am in the RUC lobby. The bundle includes a TAB frisbee, luggage tag, and Spring Break t-shirt. The first 500 students will receive their TAB gear before heading out for Spring Break!!

Spilling The Tea on Consent
Join the Peer Empowerment Program to talk about consent on Thursday, March 12 in TJ Farr 106 from 11-11:50! We’ll be watching the short video entitled “Tea and Consent” by Thames Valley Police. After the video, we will have a short discussion and Q&A. There will be two chances to see the video and be a part of the conversation- 11:10 and 11:35. Free food and drinks will be provided.

Rural Reimagined Spotlight: Dr. Kristin Pickering & the PTC Program
March, 2019 marks one year of partnership between Rural Reimagined (RR) and the Professional & Technical Communication (PTC) program in the English department. Regarding her program’s involvement, Dr. Kristin Pickering states, “Rural Reimagined is an excellent experience for students, especially through our required PTC internships. It gives students opportunities to work with the University and the community and see how their degree skills, such as grant writing, technical writing, and communication, can be utilized.” One PTC graduate and past RR intern, Matt Billings, states, “My opportunities from Rural Reimagined, coupled with my learned skills in the English PTC Program, undoubtedly gave me professional experience for my current career.” Similarly, PTC graduate Kinsey Potter states, “Working with Rural Reimagined has allowed me to utilize my PTC skills in real life. I now see that communication has a strong capability to make a change.” Matt now has a job at the Upper Cumberland Development District, and Kinsey is working on her M.A. while continuing as the RR graduate assistant. Dr. Pickering encourages students and faculty to become involved, as she states, “We have seen so much success so far in this partnership. No matter what interests students have, they can find a place in Rural Reimagined.” Wings up, Dr. Pickering and the PTC Program!

EXPW Adjunct Faculty
Nikki Desch, Adjunct Faculty in Dept. of Exercise Science will receive The Impact People Award, Richmond, VA, April 26, 2020, a master black belt humanities award, for Empowering Women, Teaching leadership and respect to others to all races. Master of Humanity Belt (6th degree Black Belt) stands for life and peace and promoting good will in martial Arts, Women Violence Abuse Programs, and Up Lifting and Empowering Women. Nikki has been an instructor in the Exercise Science department since January 2010. She teaches Self-Defense for Women, Samurai Sword, Tai Chi/Qigong, Kick Boxing and Kempojutsu. She has studied martial arts in the United States and Asia for over thirty years with extensive experience as instructor, coach, judge and competitor. Nikki is a certified Black Belt; Okinawan Karate, Japanese Karate, Chen Tai Chi Senior Instructor. In 2014 she received “Global Impact Woman of the Year” for the Martial Artists Award.”

Sports Analytics Information Meeting Tuesday March 10th
Interested in Sports Analytics? Do you like playing in fantasy sports leagues? Trying to figure out who to pick in your March Madness brackets? Fascinated by sports statistics? Tuesday March 10th at 11:00 in Johnson Hall, Room 401, we will be hosting an information session for any students and faculty that are interested in starting a group for learning about sports analytics, competing in sports analytics competitions, hearing from professionals in the field, doing research in sports analytics, and many other exciting things in the world of sports! Everyone is welcome – no experience needed!

Brass Arts Quintet presents the music of Center Stage Guest Composer Jim Self
The Brass Arts Quintet at TTU is proud to present a concert of the music of Center Stage Guest Composer Jim Self on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30pm in Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building.
For this evening’s performance, they are delighted to be featuring compositions by renowned Tubist and composer, Jim Self in addition to other works from the Renaissance through the Romantic era that were composed originally for brass.
Self is an internationally known musician, having recorded approximately 2,000 movie and TV soundtracks as well as performing live in classical and popular music styles. As a performer he is perhaps best known as the voice of the mother ship in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and was also the featured tuba soloist in John Williams’ score to “Home Alone.” He has recorded 15 albums of jazz and original music for various ensembles. His music for this concert is selected from one of Self’s latest CD releases, “Flying Circus: Music for Brass Quintet.”

Effective Presentations Workshop!
Being able to give an effective presentation and gaining confidence at public speaking are skills that will carry over into classes and career. Come to this Eagle Works workshop to learn best practices for pitches and presentations, and also find out what NOT to do! This session will help prepare you for the Eagle Works pitches, and help you no matter what you do in the future.
This workshop will be Wednesday, March 11, at 5 p.m. in the iMakerspace (3rd floor of Volpe Library). After 4:30, the iMakerSpace is accessible via the North Stairwell (past the myTECH Helpdesk).

APO Tornado Relief Drive
Alpha Phi Omega, co-ed service organization, is holding a donation drive for those in need after the Cookeville tornado. There are bins placed in the Roaden University Center lobby, dorms and academic buildings. Items needed include: toilet paper, diapers and baby food, water, bedding/blankets/pillows, and clothes. The drive will run until spring break, and any donation would be greatly appreciated.

Reminder: Nominations for the 2020 Derryberry Award due March 10
The 2020 Derryberry Award nomination deadline is Tuesday, March 10. This award was established in honor of the late Everett Derryberry after 34 years as president of Tennessee Tech. This prestigious honor grants a plaque and cash award to a graduating senior who demonstrates a high level of scholastic achievement and successful campus involvement in leadership and enrichment opportunities. Individuals who graduated in December 2019 or are scheduled to graduate in May or August 2020 are eligible for nomination. Visit the Derryberry Award webpage for more details.
