Human Ecology Friday Cafe Fall 2020
Friday Café is the hands-on learning experience for foods and nutrition students in Human Ecology. This fall semester students will utilize vegetables grown at Shipley Farm. Dates will be Sept 18, Sept 25, Oct 2, and Oct 9. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friday Café will serve only four meals this semester. All meals will be a carryout option only. There will be three time pick-up options each week (11:45 am, 12:00 pm, and 12:15 pm) with a limit of 10 meals for each time slot. Meals will be available for pickup on the front porch of Oakley Hall. Meal purchase is made through Marketplace by making prepayment by noon on Wednesday. Meal cost will be $8. Menus are posted on Marketplace and on the Human Ecology Friday Café webpage. Contact the Human Ecology office at 372-3157 with any questions.

Payroll & Position Budgeting/Control Functions Moving to the Business Office
Beginning September 1, 2020 the Payroll and Position Budgeting and Control functions for the University have moved to the Business Office. Operationally the responsibilities of these areas have not changed, only the reporting structure. This change will allow the Human Resources staff to focus on employee recruitment, retention, and other HR priorities that enhance the employee experience. It will also create efficiencies with the funds disbursement process of Payroll. Please note that all payroll checks for both employees and students will now be available at the Business Office cashier windows for pick-up. Payroll questions should still be directed to Payroll Manager, Gaile Palmer and all position budgeting questions should now be directed to Budget Director, Terri McWilliams.

“Dying of Whiteness during a Pandemic” virtual Center Stage conversation
Join us virtually for a conversation with Jonathan M. Metzl based on his most recent book and winner of 2020 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland.
Metzl is the Frederick B. Rentschler II professor of sociology and psychiatry at Vanderbilt University and director of its Center for Medicine, Health, and Society. He is the author of several books and a prominent expert on gun violence and mental illness.

Student Engagement ALC
More than ever before, college and university instructors are faced with a challenge of student engagement. In the traditional face-to-face classroom, instructor questions are often met with silence. In the online classroom, student passivity is revealed in a variety of ways: silence in Zoom video conferencing, lack of iLearn login, failure to submit assignments and limited words in a discussion board threads.
There are many suggested ways to encourage active participation in the higher ed classroom, face-to-face and online. This ALC will share some research that shows the results of student engagement activities along with effective methods for enhancing student engagement in your courses.

The Peer Empowerment Program (PEP) is hosting an information session TODAY, Wednesday, September 9th at 2 PM via Zoom. In this half-hour meeting, you’ll learn about PEP and how to become a peer educator. PEPs host awareness events, educational programs, and outreach all about campus safety! Client Success Story: Soard Properties Launches New Website
Rural Reimagined and its partner TCRI are excited to share about Soard Properties, a new client success story. Soard Properties has provided TN Tech students and surrounding communities with apartments and houses for over 40 years, but they did so without a website. With the help of technical assistance from Rural Reimagined and TCRI, Soard Properties now has a new website that features their various buildings. Kinsey Potter, a Ph.D student and the creator of the website states, “This was a great opportunity to learn website development skills and gain real life experience serving local businesses.” The management of Soard Properties states, “As many of our tenants are TTU students, Management of Soard Properties was excited to collaborate with Kinsey Potter on the website Design.
