Music City Drum Corps on Tech’s Campus!
The School of Music is excited to host Music City Drum Corps for their pre-tour band camp! They arrived on our campus Sunday, June 18th and will be on Tech’s campus until Monday, July 3rd.
Music City Drum Corps are a touring marching band from Nashville, TN and are comprised of brass, percussion, and color guard members. Participants are ages 16-21 and spend their summer traveling the country, competing in DCI competitions.
Music City will be holding large ensemble rehearsals in Tucker Stadium each night from 7pm-10pm, and these rehearsals are free and open to the public. All other sectional rehearsals throughout the day are also open to the public.
We are excited to host this world-class ensemble on Tech’s campus and hope you can come check it out!

Carving in the Round: Hand Tools and Power Carving with Stacy Motte
In this class we will learn wood carving with a focus on 3D forms for sculpture or furniture embellishment. We will work in Bass wood and cover all of the tricks and techniques for making a block of wood into a realistic representation of something else. We will learn how to use and sharpen knives and gouges and how to shape and add texture with rasps, files and rotary tools.
Open to all levels.

Illustrated Adornment – Alternative Powder Coating Techniques with Brie Flora
This workshop will introduce alternative ways to apply powder coats. Students will learn how to add patterns and illustrations to the powder coated surface using liquid powder, Prismacolor, graphite, micron pens and more. Then, students will look at two options of setting the illustrated metal pieces to create a brooch or a pendant through tab setting and/or riveting.
Basic skills such as sawing, and soldering are recommended but not required.

Postponed: Orientation for Tennessee Tech’s new research network June 27
Notice: This event has been postponed due to the Data Center outage.
A new research network called Science DMZ is set to launch at Tennessee Tech. The official opening and an orientation session for users will take place June 27, 10-11 a.m., at Stonecipher Lecture Hall 113. Researchers and administrators are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and learn about accessing this specialized network.
“The Science DMZ is an advanced network architecture designed to optimize data transfer and collaboration among researchers, institutions and external partners,” Computer Science Assistant Professor Susmit Shannigrahi said. “It offers an efficient, secure and high-bandwidth pathway for transferring large datasets.”
The network was funded through a two-year, $263,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and implemented by Tech’s Information Technology Services Assistant Director for Network Operations David Hales and HPC Systems Administrator Mike Renfro. Shannigrahi serves as the principal investigator alongside co-PI Mike Rogers, associate professor of computer science.

Tennessee Tech Student Interns for U.S. Representatives Rose
Washington, DC—Last week, United States Rep. John Rose (TN-06), a ’98 graduate of TTU, welcomed an impressive group of summer interns for 2023. Cameron Legge and two other interns from Tennessee will assist in constituent services, capitol tours, issues research, and more while working in the Congressman’s Washington, DC, office.
Cameron Legge will graduate next year with a major in Political Science. He was recently elected the President of the Associate Scholar’s Guild (ASG) and will also serve as Deputy Chief of Staff for next school year’s Student Government Association (SGA).
“It’s an honor to serve our nation and Tennesseans this summer in Representative Rose’s office in Washington DC,” said Legge. “I am excited to get to work and to gain valuable information and insight that will better prepare me for my roles in ASG and SGA to make for a better student experience at TTU.”

Biology and Earth Sciences Research Trip to Panama
In May, the Departments of Biology and Earth Sciences took a faculty-led research trip to Panama. The class was focused on how the rise of the Isthmus of Panama affected biodiversity. During this 10-day trip participants hiked in the rainforest on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Panama; snorkeled in the Pacific, near Panama City and in the Caribbean at Bocas del Toro; toured a sustainable permaculture farm on the island of Bastimentos; and visited historical ruins of old Panama that was invaded by the pirate Henry Morgan.
Thank you to the students who participated and the faculty who took the lead on this trip – Dr. Carla Hurt, Dr. Jeannette Luna, Philip Roberson and Dr. Richard Pirkle.
This trip was supported by funds from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Departments of Biology and Earth Sciences, and International Education Fees.

Tech Students and Faculty Explore Ghana, West Africa
In May, Tech students and faculty left on a study abroad program to Ghana, West Africa. Led by Dept. of Curriculum & Instruction’s Senior Lecturer Cale Koester and Associate Professor Dr. Queen Ogbomo, the participants were immersed in myriad opportunities for service learning and cultural studies.
The two-week excursion included working with a village school as observers then offered interactive lessons, reading activities, and presentations. Our students also provided the school’s library with reference and story books, assisted with their teaching lab, and band equipment repairs.
They also joined in studies at the Dagbe Cultural Institute & Arts Center, including education in drumming, dance, singing, kente weaving, basket making, local traditions, cuisine, social issues, and more.
“The students showed determination, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout this service-learning experience and we are proud of how they represented Tennessee Tech,” said Koester.
