Black History Month 2023 Events

Trauma Recovery Group
Are you struggling to work through unresolved trauma? Join our trauma recovery group to learn about the different ways trauma can affect us, develop techniques that may help in times of distress, as well as being a positive support for others who also struggle with the same experiences. This is a safe space. The Counseling Center will be hosting this group every Friday, starting on February 10, 2023, from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. in RUC 387. Mandatory Training – Title VI
All Tennessee Tech employees must complete annual Title VI training by April 10, 2023. This training can be accessed in Tech Express by locating the red tab for Title VI training on the Campus Resources Card.
Completion of this training is a component of employee performance evaluations. In addition, failure to complete the training by April 10, 2023, will result in the termination of access to Tennessee Tech computer resources.

Rural Reimagined Faculty Grant Program Recognizes Dr. Erica Bower and Her Team
Rural Reimagined would like to recognize Dr. Erica Bower (Sociology & Political Science), Dr. Rene Grimes (Curriculum &Instruction), Dr. Elizabeth Ramsey (Human Ecology), Dr. Steven Seiler (Sociology & Political Science), and their community collaborators for receiving Level 3 funding ($10,000-$25,000) from our Faculty Grant Program. Dr. Bower’s team proposed their project titled “Uniting, Empowering, and Engaging our Upper Cumberland Community to Reduce Mental Health Issues and Substance Misuse: Community-Based Training in Mental Health First Aid & Adverse Childhood Experiences,” which aims to educate Upper Cumberland community members about “the impact of adverse childhood experiences, identification of mental health issues and substance misuse, and actionable steps” to help struggling individuals by conducting at least 24 necessary training courses before June. We congratulate Dr. Bower’s team and encourage other faculty members to submit their ideas in the future!

Jeff Brown from The Biz Foundry will be leading this session on how to make your idea come to life. Business Model Canvas is a great tool for you to learn if your idea or product is viable, how to identify your customers, find any issues, and give yourself and your team the best chance for success!
The Eagle Works judging rubric is based off Business Model Canvas, so if you’re thinking about competing, this workshop is essential!
The iMakerspace is on the third floor of Volpe Library. Use the north staircase (past the MyTECH helpdesk) to access. If you need an accessible entrance, please email Andrea at akruszka@tntech.edu before 4:30 p.m. that day to arrange.

Rubrics
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) on Tuesday, January 31st at 11 AM for a workshop on rubrics. Rubrics are a best practice for communicating criteria and achievement levels of assignments to students in both online and on-ground courses. Well-developed rubrics show alignment between assignment criteria and overall module/unit and course learning objectives. Before the assignment, rubrics help students understand the connections between the “what” and “why” of learning. After the assignment, rubrics also help instructors provide quicker, more consistent feedback to students, often helping answer a common student question: why did I receive the grade I received? In this session, participants will hear from Tennessee Tech faculty who utilize rubrics and see examples of digital rubrics in iLearn. Attend the first Co-op Meetup of the semester on Tuesday, January 31, in Roaden University Center, Multipurpose Room (second floor) at 11 a.m. New guidelines, which went into effect Fall 2022 for student enrollment, will be shared.

The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be pre-selling Love Potions (plastic test tubes filled with M&Ms) through our Square Store from Jan 30 – Feb 3. We will deliver them to your Tech mailbox (for students) or office (for faculty and staff) on Feb 13. Individual love potions are $2 or you can buy 3 for $5. Employee Appreciation Event! Thursday, January 26th — Basketball at the HOOP
Get ready for an evening of fun as we celebrate employees who make Tennessee Tech an awesome place to be!
On Thursday, January 26th, employees can present their Eagle Card/ID at a table in the Hooper Eblen Center Lobby to obtain tickets to a doubleheader of Tech basketball. Each employee will be given the number of complimentary tickets in their immediate family. You will also receive a voucher to redeem for a drink and popcorn OR a drink and hotdog at any concession stand.
Games are at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and you can attend one or both games. The men’s game at 6 p.m. will be televised on ESPNEWS. Appropriate annual leave will need to be taken, and don’t forget supervisor permission, but what a good reason to ask!

Rural Reimagined Faculty Grant Program Recognizes Dr. Pedro Arce and His Team
Rural Reimagined would like to recognize Dr. Pedro Arce (Chemical Engineering), Dr. Andrea Arce-Trigatti (Curriculum and Instruction Adjunct), and Dr. J. Robby Sanders (Chemical Engineering) for receiving Level 3 funding ($10,000-$25,000) from our Faculty Grant Program. Dr. Arce’s team proposed their project titled “Expanding Sustainability Efforts through Intentional Learning: Using a Mixed Method Approach to Exploring Student Perceptions of the BioFoundry Initiative,” which discerns “student perceptions of sustainability efforts and design” by combining survey methods design and content analysis. Their project’s social implications for rural research relate to water resources utilization and recycling. Our Faculty Grant Program seeks to promote faculty research and development inside Tech and surrounding rural communities. We congratulate Drs. Arce, Arce-Trigatti, and Sanders and encourage other faculty members to submit their ideas in the future!
