Medicinal Chemistry Webinar for National Chemistry Week- Oct. 16
Join the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) as we kick off National Chemistry Week! The theme this year is “The Healing Power of Chemistry” and focuses on health and medicine. On Monday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in SLH 126 we will be showing the ACS webinar “Creating Psychedelic Analogs to Treat Neuropsychiatric Disease”. The webinar will discuss how psychedelics and related molecules like DMT, LSD, and MDMA rapidly promote the growth of neurons. Snacks will be served. Questions can be sent to smacsttu@gmail.com.

Dr. Bhattacharya Receives American Chemical Society Grant
Dr. Gourab Bhattacharya (Earth Sciences) recently received a grant from the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Petroleum Research Fund. This ACS research grant will span 2 years and fund 4-6 undergraduate students.
Dr. Bhattacharya and his students will investigate the timing and intensity of paleo-thermal events within the rocks of the Cumberland Plateau. This research will enhance our comprehension of the geological evolution of the hydrocarbon-rich southern Appalachian Basin, specifically the portion situated in Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau.
Congratulations, Dr. Bhattacharya on receiving this grant, and wings up for involving undergraduates in your research!

Join us at the Native Plant Garden
Please join the Department of Biology for a fun community event on October 28 from 9-3, where volunteers will help the TN Tech Native Plant Garden prepare for upcoming construction by transplanting plants for safekeeping. Volunteers will be able to obtain free plants for their own gardens in return for assisting us. Kids crafts, hot apple cider, baked goods, botanical art, and other demonstrations will be available throughout the day. The garden is located in between Johnson and Pennebaker Halls on campus. Bacchanal 2023 is Almost Here!
Bacchanal is coming up on Sunday, October 22! Hosted by Tennessee Tech’s School of Art, Craft and Design, Bacchanal is an event for the public to gather and show support for students in School of Art, Craft and Design degree programs. Thanks to Bacchanal supporters, the School of Art, Craft and Design is able to award multiple scholarships to students each year. To date, Bacchanal has supported students with more than $150,000 in scholarships.
Bacchanal attendees can participate in a live auction of art and fine craft, created by local and national artists, Tennessee Tech alumni, faculty, students and artists in residence. Guests also enjoy fine wine, craft beer and a buffet of delicious dishes prepared by Spankies Restaurant. Live music will be performed by students from Tennessee Tech’s school of music. The event takes place at Spankies Restaurant on Sunday, October 22 from 1-5pm. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $60 or at the door for $70. Click here for more information.

Dress and Dine Event
The College of Business is excited to announce its Dress and Dine event. Dress and Dine will be held in the Roaden University Center Multipurpose Room on Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. This event will equip students with the necessary skills to dress and dine professionally. The admission fee is $15, and will provide dinner for the attendees. Students of all majors and classifications are welcome to attend the Dress and Dine event. Wisdom for an Online Age with Guest Speaker Samuel James
Our digital devices are sources of information and entertainment, they allow us to stay in touch with
friends and family. But that’s not all. Smartphones and social media are linked to increased rates of depression, anxiety and loneliness. Even those who avoid mental health problems say their online experience leaves them “in some kind of spiritual and intellectual haze.”In this talk, Samuel James will help us understand how the internet affects us. He will show how Scripture offers wisdom for habits of resistance to the allures of our digital devices.
Samuel James is an editor for Crossway Books. He has written for The Wall Street Journal, National
Review, Time, First Things, and The Gospel Coalition. Join the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFÉ) and the Women’s Center for a Team Building Workshop facilitated by Tammy Key on Friday, October 20th from 12-3 PM. This workshop is designed to help foster better group collaboration and team awareness. Participants will be able to identify individual strengths that help with team engagement, improve your experience on a team, and improve the overall team outcome. Participants will learn strategies for addressing team conflict and leave with increased confidence working within a group.
