Break the Silence about Domestic Violence
The Tech Women’s Center invites you to join Legal Aid and the Women’s Center at Tennessee State for an educational panel discussion and Q&A on domestic violence, Thursday October 22nd at 6 pm. Register here for an invitation.
Our panelists include Latoya Townsend, Director of Training and Outreach at the Family Safety Center, and domestic violence survivor and advocate Karyn Johnson, who will discuss warning signs of violence, how to help someone in a domestic violence situation, available resources, coping mechanisms, and personal experiences. Join us to break the silence on this common experience of power-based violence.

Research Panel: Using Spatial Data to Understand the COVID-19 Pandemic
Please join the Department of Earth Sciences and GeoClub this Thursday for a research panel: Using Spatial Data to Understand the COVID-19 Pandemic. The hour will consist of two short talks followed by an open panel discussion. Elizabeth Zizzamia, the geospatial analyst behind the Virginia state COVID-19 dashboard (University of Richmond), will speak first about Geovisualization in the time of Coronavirus. Then, TTU alumni Natalie Robbins will present her work on Visualizing the Spread of COVID-19 in Tennessee. Natalie graduated from the Professional Science Masters (PSM) program in 2019 and now works with the Vanderbilt Initiative for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Research.

Diversity & Inclusion Seminar Series October 22
The Computer Science Diversity Committee is hosting a Diversity & Inclusion Seminar Series featuring four amazing speakers. Thursday, October 22, Dr. Margaret Burnett will be our speaker. Dr. Burnett is a Professor at Oregon State University in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She is the creator of the GENDERMAG project, which helps software developers & usability professionals find and fix software features with such gender-inclusiveness “bugs”. Turkey/Ham Program for Holiday Food Baskets
The Campus Food Pantry is partnering with the National Society of Black Engineers and the Food, Nutrition and Dietetics Club in order to provide more holiday food baskets this year. We predict that there will be more folks in need than in years past. Another drive thru drop off event, sponsored by the FND Club, will be held October 20, 2020 at the Food Pantry. From 4pm – 6pm you can bring your items you want to donate and we will pick them up, curbside. Tech Village 910 N. Willow Ave., Cookeville, TN 38501.
Items being collected: mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, gravy mix, corn bread mix, canned sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, and other canned veggies, cranberry sauce, pineapples, cream of mushroom or chicken, cake and brownie mixes, pie filling and pie crusts, salt/pepper packets, and other items you would expect to see on a holiday food table.
Another way you can participate in this program is to sponsor a Turkey or Ham for a family receiving a basket. You can do this at the giving page for the food pantry. You can use the pre-selected $20 if you would like. If you click on the fund, there will be a drop down menu you can choose the Turkey/Ham Program. https://www.tntech.edu/volunteer/outreach.php

Research 101: Identifying Funding Opportunities
Today is the last day to register for the next session of the Research 101 Workshop Series: Identifying Funding Opportunities taking place on October 22nd from 11am-12pm via Teams. Participants will walk through the process for identifying funding opportunities including learning more about funding resources such as SPIN, Grants.gov, and Cornerstone OpsWATCH.

Eagle’s Flight Presentation-October 22nd
Come hear Ms. Kate Nicewicz, the Director of the MBA program, speak on the importance of travelling and intercultural awareness. She will also talk about trips taken by students in the International Experience course in the MBA program. This event will take place on October 22nd from 11 to 12 (dead hour) in Johnson Hall room 304. Boxed lunches will be provided. This event is sponsored by Eagle’s Flight.

Reminder of Scholar-Mentor Award nomination deadline of Nov. 13
The University established the Scholar-Mentor Award to honor Tennessee Tech’s long history of close relationships between faculty and their students. The award honors a faculty member who displays outstanding mentorship, integrating scholarship, research and teaching excellence. The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2020-21 Scholar Mentor Award is Friday, Nov. 13, 2020. Sick Leave Bank Enrollment – Faculty & Staff THROUGH October 31, 2020
The annual enrollment period for Faculty and Non-Faculty Sick Leave Banks is October 1 through October 31, 2020. If you are already a sick leave bank member, you do not need to re-enroll.
Please complete your enrollment form via DocuSign at Sick Leave Bank Form. Your form must be received by 4:30 pm on October 31, 2020. Please note that if you do wish to participate, the assessment will be fifteen (15.0) sick leave hours for full-time employees (prorated for permanent, part time). This will be deducted from your November Leave Report which will be turned in at the first of December.
NOTE: You may receive sick leave donations from other employees only if you are a sick bank member. Since the beginning of the program in 1989, there has not been a need to require more than the initial assessment of 15 hours for each full-time member.

Check out the Sustainable Book Display in the Volpe Library!
Happy Sustainability Month! Take some time this month to check out the Sustainable Book Display in the Volpe Library while you are studying. This display features a variety of different books that highlight how to go green and the importance of being sustainable. It is located on a bookshelf to the left of the front desk and near the recycling station. It will be available throughout the month of October.

- 11am – 2pm on Centennial Plaza. We will have all collected items sorted on tables for you to make boxes onsite and donate to the shipping fee. Volunteers will be wearing gloves and masks to assist you in making boxes.

Apply for Next Year’s Scholarships by December 15
The general scholarship application for the 2021-2022 academic year is due Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020. All students must complete this application in order to be eligible for Tennessee Tech scholarships in the 2021-2022 academic year.
Even if you have a renewable departmental scholarship this year, you have to re-apply in order for that scholarship to be renewed!
To apply, log into your Eagle Online account, choose the “Student” tab and select the “Apply for Scholarships/Accept Scholarships” link. For additional assistance and information, please visit the Scholarship website.
