SERS Grant Awarded for R.A.C.E. PLUS: Professionalism and Leadership Program
The R.A.C.E. PLUS project has been awarded a SERS grant for 2020-2021. The project is a collaboration between the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Charria Campbell (PI), the College of Engineering Student Success Center, the College of Business Student Success Center, and the Office of Admissions.
The goal of R.A.C.E. PLUS is to increase support for diverse students at Tennessee Tech to ensure retention, persistence, and success after college. It will include a course on professional development, workshops on career readiness, emphasis on research, and networking events. Speaking about the project, Ms. Campbell says, “The TBR grant will aid us in our efforts to continue to support students from underrepresented backgrounds at all levels during their time here at Tech. This funding allows us to provide more opportunities through the partnerships our four areas have been working to provide for the students and will create a wider range of programming to help our students become leaders in their fields and in their communities.”

Blood Drive
TTU’s Student Nurses’ Association is in partnership with Blood Assurance to host a blood drive here on campus on September 8th. Due to COVID-19 precautions, it will no longer be held in the Pride Room. Instead, Blood Assurance will be parking two buses on the quad that students can visit to give blood. It is recommended that students willing to donate blood register online prior to September 8th to save time, but they can register you on scene as well. We had a great turnout last semester to our blood drive and we look forward to seeing the same energy from our students this year!

New Official Stock Site Released
The current Tennessee Tech stock site is undergoing an upgrade! The new stock site is easier to navigate and find what you need, with more advanced search capabilities and the ability to curate photos for projects. So long as they’ve logged into IDme first, anyone with a Tennessee Tech login will be able to access the stock site. If you don’t have a subscription, you will be able to download web-sized versions of stock images. As before, the stock site is available at https://photo.tntech.edu. A guide to using the new stock site is available for your reference. You can also access it from within the stock site by clicking “Help” in the top navigation. If you have any questions about using the stock site, or need any assistance, feel free to fill out the support contact form, or email the Web & Digital Media team directly at webmaster@tntech.edu.

Part-Time work opportunity with the Admissions Office!
The Tennessee Tech Admissions Office is looking for some awesome current students to be our STAR callers this semester! You’ll mostly be calling newly admitted students and students who haven’t completed their application, meaning you’re just a happy and excited voice to congratulate them and share your experiences at Tech.
We work Mon-Fri afternoons, the exact time each day will be decided after we have more STARs. It is a paid position where you can work up to 10 hrs per week.

Forward Into Light Suffrage Celebration – TONIGHT
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment and women’s right to vote at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26, on Centennial Plaza (rain location Roaden University Center Multipurpose Room). Join the Women’s Center as we take part in the nationwide Forward Into Light Campaign where buildings across the country will light up in purple and gold (the colors of the Women’s Suffrage movement and Tech!) on this date. There will be displays, activities, snacks, and giveaways.

Faculty Grant Spotlight: Dr. DiFurio and Ms. Nabors Awarded $63,285 Rural-Based
Rural Reimagined recognizes PI Dr. Ferdinand DiFurio (Economics Finance and Marketing) and CO-PI Ms. Yolunda Nabors (Economics Finance and Marketing) for being awarded a $63,285 rural-based grant from the Tennessee Rural Communications Cooperatives Association to conduct an economic impact analysis of a broadband project in Tennessee. According to Dr. DiFurio and Ms. Nabors, “Broadband access that meets established standards is considered by many a necessary condition for technological advance and economic growth in modern day times. And while it is clear that broadband expansion creates jobs and increases business and commerce, it represents technological progress that is vital to a growing economy.” Rural Reimagined is excited to see the impact of this study on our surrounding rural areas. Wings up!

Faculty Grant Spotlight: Mechanical Engineering Department and EOA Grant
Rural Reimagined recognizes PI Dr. Pingen Chen and CO-PIs Drs. Vahid Motevalli, Stephen Canfield, Olorunfemi Ojo, and Indranil Bhattacharya for being awarded a $779,823 rural-based grant from the U.S. Dept. Of Energy for developing an EV demonstration testbed in the Upper Cumberland region. Although electric vehicles (EVs) are promising solutions for rural mobility due to the lower fuel cost and lower maintenance cost, rural and economically distressed areas are facing numerous challenges in adopting EVs due to low population density, lack of EV charging infrastructures, lack of experience, and low consumer awareness. The project’s EV demonstration testbed will provide the experience, research, demonstration and educational opportunities needed to address EV adoption issues in addition to reducing transportation cost, fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and improving the fuel diversity, environmental quality and public health in rural areas.
