Dr. Joshua Hall Receives Grant to Study Endangered Species
Due to habitat alteration, emerging infectious diseases, and rapid climate change, biodiversity is rapidly declining across the globe. Some species, like amphibians, are particularly vulnerable to these aspects of global change and warrant state- or federal-level protection to prevent population declines or extinction. The streamside salamander (Ambystoma barbouri) is listed as endangered in the state of Tennessee and is currently undergoing a species status assessment by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife department. Multiple Tennessee agencies (TWRA, TDEC), universities (Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State and Middle Tennessee State), as well as the Nashville Zoo are collaborating to understand existing threats of streamside salamanders in Tennessee and prioritize populations for conservation efforts.
Dr. Joshua Hall of TN Tech recently received a grant from TWRA to consider how Tennessee populations of streamside salamanders will respond to rising temperatures due to global change. In particular, his research group is comparing Tennessee populations of salamanders to populations from the northern portion of the range in Kentucky and Ohio. This work will demonstrate if and how Tennessee populations differ from those elsewhere in the range in their responses to temperature. This knowledge will help stakeholders at the state and federal level make conservation decisions regarding the species.
Critical to the success of this work is Dr. Hall’s graduate student, Julia Thulander, who is conducting this research for her master’s thesis. Additionally, the research could not take place without the work of numerous undergraduate students who are currently helping with data collection and animal care.

• The deadline for receipt of any payroll changes normally due by the 15th is 4:30 P.M. on Friday, November 10th
• November Student/Temp payroll is on Friday, November 10th
• November monthly payroll is on Thursday, November 30thDecember Deadlines
• Approval of Student/Temp payroll in Time Clock Plus is due by 12:00 P.M. on Friday, December 1st
• November leave reports are due by Friday, December 1st (Approvals due Tuesday, December 5th)
• Extra Pay timesheets are due by 4:30 PM on Tuesday, December 5th
• December Student and Temp payroll is on Tuesday, December 12th
• All other payroll items normally due on the 15th are due on Friday, December 8th
• December TCP approvals need to be approved through Thursday, December 21st. The remaining can be approved after returning from break.
• December monthly payroll is on Thursday, December 21st
• Any checks not picked up will be mailed at noon on December 21stJanuary Deadlines

Jess Tolbert: Artist Talk at the JDAG & Demonstration at the Craft Center
Artist, Jess Tolbert, will be giving a lecture this Thursday, Nov. 9th, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. in the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery. The JDAG is located on the first floor of the RUC, next to the spiral staircase. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available as well.
Earlier in the day, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Tolbert will be giving a micro welding demonstration at the Craft Center in the metals studio.
Jess Tolbert is a contemporary studio jeweler, visual artist, and Assistant Professor of Art and Head of the Jewelry + Metals program at the University of Texas at El Paso. They received their MFA from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and her BFA from Texas State University, San Marcos, with a focus in jewelry and metalsmithing. They have participated in multiple artist residencies. Jess has been selected for numerous prestigious awards including the Preziosa Young 2020 award based in Florence, Italy, and as a Finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize 2020. They are a co-founder of the curatorial group Secret Identity Projects. Jess’ work is represented by Gallery Loupe (Montclair, NJ) and Gallery 2052 (Chicago, IL).

CPR Classes at the Burn!
Campus Recreation is happy to announce that Heartsaver CPR/AED classes are now available at the Marc. L. Burnett Student Recreation and Fitness Center. Learn how to provide CPR to infants, children, and adults. You will also be trained in the use of the Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Successful completion of this class will result in you being certified in Heartsaver CPR/AED by the American Heart Association. This class is meant to prepare you to deal with cardiac emergencies until professional emergency medical service providers arrive at the scene. It is a 2-year certification. Classes are scheduled now for November and December, with the first class being on Tuesday, November 14th at 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Registration for classes is available online at Tennessee Tech Campus Recreation . The price per class is $50.00 per person. Please contact TTUFit@tntech.edu with any questions.

Engaging Students in Office Hours
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) for our first Tech Tuesday in November. Some faculty are reconceptualizing office hours as a way to increase FSI. Tennessee Tech Applies for “Best Places to Work”
Tennessee Tech University is participating in an employee engagement and satisfaction survey managed by Best Companies Group. The survey will serve two objectives: 1) Use consolidated feedback to help identify and address issues and concerns to promote retention, and 2) Earn recognition as a “Best Place to Work” in Tennessee to enhance talent recruitment and interest in working at Tennessee Tech.

Department of Chemistry Well-Represented at SERMACS
Twelve chemistry students and three faculty members represented Tennessee Tech at the annual Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, October 25-29, in Durham, North Carolina. This meeting featured a diverse program of researchers from all disciplines of chemistry.
Dr. Wilson Gichuhi and Dr. Kyle Murphy presented their research and Dr. Amanda Carroll attended as chair of the American Chemical Society Committee on Education and chair of the Undergraduate Student Advisory Board.
Four graduate students presented their research. Dr. Andrew Callender advised Busoloa Olope and Oluwasola Ifedayo. Dr. Gichuhi advised Dushmantha Abeyaooriya and Nolan White.
Eight undergraduate students presented their research. Those mentored by Dr. Murphy are Iroda Abdullaeva, Wesley Gibson and Danielle Ferguson. Dr. Gichuhi advised Jonathan Dupuy. Students mentored by Dr. Cojocaru are Sarah Beshara, Will Collier, and Diana Popa. Mitchell Swann was advised by Dr. Ranil Gurusinghe.
What a wonderful representation by our faculty and students in chemistry! Wings up for all of your hard work!
