Non-Instructional Faculty Assignment Submission 2023-2024
Proposals from faculty are now being accepted for the 2023-2024 academic year for the Non-Instructional Faculty Assignments. The purposes of the non-instructional assignments are: to contribute to the professional growth of the faculty; to improve the teaching and the curriculum across the University; and/or to enhance the scholarship and academic excellence of the University in ways that cannot be accomplished under the constraints of the regular workload assignments. Submission deadlines: January 16, 2024 – Suggested deadline for proposals to department chairs; January 26, 2024 – Deadline for proposals to Academic Affairs. Film on Cohen’s Research Wins Award
A short film entitled “Under Pressure” and highlighting Dr. Brad Cohen’s research recently won second place at the Chene Film Festival. The Film Festival, presented by Ducks Unlimited and hosted in Memphis, Tennessee, featured short films by numerous creators and focused on stories about outdoor recreation and conservation.
“Under Pressure,” produced by Brandon Martin, highlights Cohen’s ongoing waterfowl research in western Tennessee. Featured in the film are Cohen and his students Grant Rhodes, Cory Highway and Colin Dunkel. The group is studying how Mallards respond to hunting pressure and interact with food, refuges and private land. All research is sponsored by grants that Cohen has received from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
Congratulations, Dr. Cohen, on receiving more grants and involving students directly in ongoing research!

Tech Women’s Basketball Hosts Middle Tennessee
Cheer on your Golden Eagles this Sunday, December 10 as they take on Middle Tennessee State University at 1:00 p.m. It’s Purple wave day so wear your favorite purple Tech gear! It is also Camper Appreciation Day! All kids who attended Coach Rosamond’s summer camp can wear their camp t-shirt to receive FREE admission!
All Tech students can show their Eagle ID card to receive FREE admission. Faculty and staff can call the Athletics Ticket Office at 931-372-3669 to purchase tickets.

Volunteers Wanted!
The Tennessee Tech Athletics Department is looking for volunteers to serve on Thursday, December 14 for their annual Education Day. Elementary and middle school classrooms from all over Putnam County take the day off of school to come to Tech to participate in various educational activities and watch a Tech Basketball game!
Volunteers are needed at the Hooper Eblen Center from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided and all volunteers receive a FREE Tech T-shirt! Duties include assisting with ticketing, parking, and working with students and teachers.

Great Trains & Grand Canyons trip for Tennessee Tech faculty and staff
Tennessee Tech’s Crawford Alumni Center has partnered with Premier World Discovery to offer a unique travel opportunity for Tech faculty, staff, alumni and friends. From March 3-8, 2024, we’ll spend six days/five nights in Sedona, Arizona. The itinerary includes two historic train rides, Chapel of the Holy Cross, the Spanish-Mexican Village of Tlaquepaque, Uptown Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, Montezuma Castle National Monument, the old mining town of Jerome and Old Town Scottsdale. The highlight of the trip is a two-hour train journey aboard the Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park!

Niec Presents G.I.F.T.S. at NCA Conference
Michele Niec, a master’s candidate in Interdisciplinary Studies, recently showcased her work at the 109th National Communications Association (NCA) Annual Conference held this year in National Harbor, MD. Michele’s presentation, entitled “Going Beyond Words to Teach Responsible Online Behavior: Exploring the Power and Freedom of Developing Students’ Non-Verbal Computer-Mediated Communication Skills,” was part of the G.I.F.T.S. (Great Ideas for Teaching Students) segment. Over 60 communications educators from universities across the U.S. joined Michele for insightful discussion and a review of the detailed lesson plan she presented.

The Center provides service learning opportunities that integrate community service with instruction and reflection. Service projects range from stuffing backpacks full of school supplies for K-12 students in need to ensuring that Tech’s food pantry is stocked and staffed for those experiencing food insecurity.

Live Events! FAFSA Simplified Presentation and Q&A for Parents and Students

Important tasks to do prior to 2024-2025 FAFSA release
1. Students and parents are highly encouraged to create their FSA IDs prior to the 2024-2025 FAFSA release. FSA IDs can be created at www.studentaid.gov.
2.The Scholarship Application Deadline is December 15th! Students can complete this (before the FAFSA) by logging into Tech Express and using the ScholarWeb quick link.

This year, Tech chose to focus on raising funds for The Oracle student newspaper to honor nearly 100 years of campus news, free speech and experiential learning. On April 24, 2024, The Oracle will turn 100. Thank you for ensuring that this important campus tradition can continue.

SGA Shines at Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature (TISL)
Tennessee Tech University’s Student Government Association (SGA) attended the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature (TISL), held at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville from November 16-20, 2023. Throughout the event, SGA members actively participated, embodying the roles of legislators and engaging in impactful discussions on crucial issues. Braxton Westbrook, Chief of Staff to the SGA President, was reelected as TISL’s Lieutenant Governor. Kelsey Hewitt, the Secretary of the First Year Assembly, received recognition as the Best Lobbying CEO. Another outstanding participant, Mariam Abbas, was honored as the Best Lobbyist in her firm. Claire Myers, SGA’s own Vice President, was awarded the prestigious Carlisle Award. The SGA’s achievements at TISL underscore its commitment to fostering leadership and representing the interests of Tennessee Tech’s student body on a broader stage.

Submit Causes for I Heart Tech Students 2024!
It’s time to submit causes for next year’s “I Heart Tech Students” initiative. Every year “I Heart Tech Students” raises funds for areas on campus that directly benefit students – scholarships, programs, and resources that enrich their college experience. Causes can be submitted for university colleges, departments, and programs.
The 2024 “I Heart Tech Students” initiative will run from February 14 through March 27, 2024.
