    Rural Reimagined Student Spotlight: Ky Hensley & Rugby

    Rural Reimagined features English Major Ky Hensley for her Historic Rugby Service Learning Project under the mentorship of Dr. Josephine McQuail. After researching Rugby, Ky identified an interesting collection of postcards sent from Sarah Kellogg Kimber Walton during her travels to England in 1908-1909. After discovering many postcards were neither transcribed nor inventoried, Ky proposed designing an inventory to allow readability and accessible location of the postcards. Ky states, “I feel like this project would be a wonderful project for students to continue working on, as I am laying the foundation of what I hope the postcard database will someday become.” Ky recently joined the Rural Reimagined student club, which views the project as a great service opportunity for the future.     Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Ryan Colon and Kaitlyn Kidwell

    The Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar is returning this week in a virtual format, and will feature TTU Electrical Engineering Major Ryan Colon and TTU Physics Major Kaitlyn Kidwell. Ryan will discuss his work enhancing the capabilities of a robotic arm designed for mapping the magnetic field in a magneto-gravitational neutron “bottle”. Kaitlyn will describe how she learned to analyze data from the Las Cumbres Observatory to determine the distance to a typical “standard candle” RR Lyrae star. The seminar will be this Friday, April 24th, at 3pm, and is geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!     TN Tech Alum Spotlight on Behalf of Rural Reimagined: Jordan Hughett and Rugby

    After partnering with Rugby, a Victorian village founded in 1880, Rural Reimagined and the Center for Rural Innovation feature alum Jordan Hughett for his success and continuing work at Rugby.  Jordan graduated with a History and Education Bachelor’s in 2019 and states, “I have loved history since I was a small child, and history, music, and faith are the cornerstones of my life.” After earning a fellowship playing banjo to travel and meet other ballad singers, Jordan played music at Historic Rugby events. He says, “music there allowed me to meet the people who lived in the village who would later be colleagues and friends.” Jordan spent a summer working at Rugby, connecting history, music, and faith to it. He continues as Rugby’s Development Associate and states, “I love being able to take the story of Rugby and present it to people in a way that they can find interesting.” Wings up, Jordan!   • NSF announces deadline and webinars for Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program

    NSF recently announced Aug. 25 as the deadline for Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program proposals. NSF’s Division of Undergraduate Education and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will offer two 90-minute webinars on preparing the proposals. The webinar for Tracks 1-3 (capacity building) will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. (ET), Tuesday, April 28, and the webinar for Track 4 (research) will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. (ET), Thursday, April 30.

    The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program seeks to encourage talented STEM majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science (including engineering and computer science) teachers. The program encourages creative and innovative proposals that address the critical need for recruiting and preparing highly effective elementary and secondary science and math teachers in high-need local educational agencies.

  • National Science Foundation issues update regarding COVID-19

    The National Science Foundation has issued Important Notice No 146 to the Community Regarding COVID-19. NSF has also issued additional guidance on NSF’s implementation of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Memorandum (M-20-17).  Questions about the policies described in the NSF Guidance should be directed to policy@nsf.gov. Questions specific to a particular award should be directed to the cognizant NSF Program Officer. NSF is working to update existing FAQs and other resources to reflect NSF’s new guidance and will keep you informed on its website at: nsf.gov/coronavirus.  Visit the Office of Research home page (www.tntech.edu/research) for more details.

     

  • Research and Creative Inquiry Day event to be held in digital format

    Due to the continuing developments regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the 2020 Research and Creative Inquiry Day event will be moving forward in a digital format. Participating students who have submitted an abstract should create a PDF version of their posters and send them via email to jlmurdock@tntech.edu by Monday, April 20.  The subject line of the email should read “Poster Submission.” Judges will be provided their posters to evaluate via email on April 21.    

    Revised Event Timeline:

    April 21-24:

      •   Judges will evaluate posters based on the evaluation forms on the Research and Creative Inquiry Day website.

    Week of April 27:

        Winners will be announced and winning certificates mailed.

  • TBR Student Engagement, Retention, and Success (SERS) Call for Proposals

    The TBR recently released a Call for Proposals for the 2020-2021 TBR Student Engagement, Retention, and Success (SERS) initiative. Anyone planning to apply should complete a Notice of Intent to Submit Proposal (found on the Office of Research website Forms page) ASAP. All proposal narratives must be submitted to research@tntech.edu by noon, Monday, May 11, to ensure there is time for the required Counsel review.

    SERS grants are available for new or existing campus services or programs that target underserved student populations, including, but not limited to, students of color, low-income students, adults, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and traditionally underrepresented genders by discipline/CTE program. Maximum funding levels for both pilot programs and program enhancements is $50,000.
