    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Kaitlyn Kidwell, Emma Mitchell, TTU Physics

    This week’s (virtual) Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will feature talks from Kaitlyn Kidwell and Emma Mitchell, Physics majors who are also working toward an Astronomy minor. Both Kaitlyn and Emma participated in a research course offered by Our Solar Siblings in which they learned to analyze data from the Las Cumbres Observatory to determine the distance to “standard candle” RR Lyrae stars. Measuring distances to astronomical objects is tricky; Kaitlyn and Emma will describe their experiences and how they managed to accomplish this feat. The seminar will be this Friday, October 23rd at 4pm. It is geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!     Today is the last day to register for the next session of the Research 101 Workshop Series: Identifying Funding Opportunities taking place on October 22nd from 11am-12pm via Teams. Participants will walk through the process for identifying funding opportunities including learning more about funding resources such as SPIN, Grants.gov, and Cornerstone OpsWATCH.

    The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2020-2021 Caplenor Faculty Research Award is Friday, November 13, 2020.  No individual may nominate more than one person.     Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Austin Marler, TTU Mechanical Engineering

    This week’s (virtual) Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will feature Electrical Engineering major Austin Marler. Austin spent the summer working on an exciting new beam line facility being developed by physics professor Dr. Rajabali here at TTU. In his talk TTU Ion Generator Development, Austin will describe his research directed at reconfiguring an existing cesium sputtering source into a laser ablation source. The seminar will be this Friday, October 16th at 4pm. It is geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!   • TBR to fund projects for low-cost or free educational materials

    The Office of Research wants to remind you of the TBR “Open Educational Resources and Low Costs/No Costs Educational Support Materials” funding opportunity.  The deadline is Nov. 1, with funds available for Spring 2021. These grants target digital education initiatives and creation of educational support materials that are low, or no, cost to undergraduate and/or graduate students in new or existing campus services or programs to increase equity in access among historically underserved student populations, including, but not limited to, students of color, low income students, adults, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and traditionally underrepresented genders. Projects should involve collaborations across departments to ensure an institutional approach. Please complete the internal Notice of Intent to Submit Proposal form if you are planning to apply.       • The University established the Scholar-Mentor Award to honor Tennessee Tech’s long history of close relationships between faculty and their students.
