    Blood Drive outside the Library!

    TTU’s Student Nurses’ Association is hosting another blood drive, this time right outside the library with the American Red Cross! It will be tomorrow, Thursday the 5th, from 10-3! Come and donate blood to get a complimentary $5 Amazon gift card. Don’t like needles? No problem!     Do you love Criminal Minds & true crime? Save the date for the Sociology and Criminal Justice Club (@TTUSocClub) and the Peer Empowerment Program’s (@PEPTNTech) event “Criminal Minds” Fact or Fiction?” Don’t miss us passing out popcorn in the Quad tomorrow to enjoy while you watch the recommended episodes before this event!

    At the event, an expert panel will discuss the realities of the criminal justice system. You can submit questions to the expert panelists AND win prizes for attending this event!

  • Student Success Story: Austin Sanders and Pine Street Garden

    Student Success Story: Austin Sanders and Pine Street Garden

    Rural Reimagined recognizes Austin Sanders, an Agriculture and Horticulture major, for his work with Teens Need Leaders and the Pine Street Garden. Austin interns for the SeedFork of the Highlands, a nonprofit local foods initiative corporation. When at the garden, he shares project ideas and educates middle and high school students about the importance of their work, when to harvest, how to maintain the harvest, and beneficial practices of gardening. Austin is a student in Dr. Douglas Airhart’s Special Topics Class “Community Gardening Training and Development” which aligns with his work and Rural Reimagined’s initiatives. On the garden, Austin states, “I think it helps connect the community more, definitely, and it helps kind of ground and connect gardening with life and everything.” Wings up, Austin!     Come listen to individuals from around the world present about their home country and its culture. Time will be given at the end for questions from the audience, and boxed lunches will be provided.     Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Norris Incorporates Rural Into Coursework

    Rural Reimagined recognizes Dr. Lachelle Norris, Professor of Sociology, for integrating rural components into her coursework. Her Sociology of Appalachia class discusses grassroots economic development by highlighting Upper Cumberland businesses that value environmental and economic sustainability. The students also preserve and share rural traditions and practices on a class website devoted to this video project: https://www.sustainableappalachian.com/. In her Rural Sociology class, students work with local community members on a variety of projects in our rural areas. Both are upper-level electives available to all students. Dr. Norris states, “My goal is that my students will uncover the roots of the problems in our rural areas and come up with solutions that will not only provide temporary relief but that can make a difference for the long haul.” If you are incorporating rural into your coursework or research, email Kinsey Potter at sw-kbpotter@tntech.edu to share your story.
