Rural Reimagined congratulates Dennis Piercy, a Master’s Chemical Engineering student, in winning second place for his student presentation at the 2021 Tennessee Chapter of the American Fisheries Society meeting. He presented about the joint research effort between the Water Center and the Chemical Engineering department for producing a nitrogen stripping/oxygenating column for fish hatcheries that would help our rural ecosystems. Dr. Jeff Schaeffer and Dr. Holly Stretz mentored Dennis throughout the project. Regarding his project and presentation, Dennis stated, “This opportunity really has been so unique due to the interdisciplinary cooperation between chemical engineering and the Water Center. I took a chemical engineering design and presented it to fish specialists effectively, and I was so happy that people were interested in the research. This has been an amazing experience that has expanded my knowledge and skill sets as I transition from academia to industry.” Wings up!
The Student Nurses’ Association is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, March 30 from 10-3. The buses will be parked in front of the Volpe library.

Arun Gandhi is the fifth grandson of India’s legendary leader, Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi. Grandfather taught Arun to understand nonviolence through understanding violence. “If we know how much passive violence we perpetrate against one another we will understand why there is so much physical violence plaguing societies and the world,” Gandhi said. Through lessons taught from his grandfather, Arun says, he learned about violence and about anger. Arun has dedicated his life in socio-political activism, including many projects for the social and economic uplifting of the oppressed using constructive programs, the backbone of Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence.
The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in a nonprofit that equips people to use nonviolence to create a sustainable and just world for all and was founded by Arun and his wife, Sunanda, at Christian Brothers University in Memphis in 1991. They moved the institute to Rochester, NY in 2007 and while he is no longer formally involved in the Institute, Arun is an important elder, teacher and active participant. Author of several books and participant with many notable interfaith activities, be sure not to miss this opportunity to hear him address our campus community.

Landscape Workshop’s paid internship program will provide students training in a wide array of departments including maintenance, enhancements, irrigation, seasonal color, and business development. Interns will work directly in the field at one of their branch locations under the guidance of a seasoned mentor for 8-12 weeks. Landscape Workshop will also be recruiting for their full-time field manager positions.
