Open House June 10: Ayers Education Center, Cookeville/Putnam Co. Animal Shelter
The Friends of Cookeville/Putnam County Animals invite the Tech community to celebrate the grand opening of the Dr. Mary Ayers Education Center on Thurs., June 10.
Dr. Ayers, remembered fondly by friends, colleagues, and alumni, taught in the College of Education from 1972-2004. She passed away in 2016. Her education center will provide programming integrating learning, pets, care, and fun!
Please stop by anytime on June 10th between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. CDT to help us celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Ayers. Tours of the shelter are at 4:15 and 5:15. The facility is located at 2650 Gainesboro Grade in Cookeville.

Student & Faculty Spotlight: Three PTC Students Intern With Rural Reimagined
Rural Reimagined (RR) continues its successful partnership with the Professional & Technical Communications (PTC) program and officially welcomes student interns Kyle Metz, Nicki Parish, and Jonah Wolfersberger for the summer 2021 semester. Metz, Parish, and Wolfersberger represent the PTC program and will receive real-world communication experience by writing and editing stories and articles centered around surrounding rural communities. They will additionally use their PTC skillsets to assist local businesses through website editing and more. Regarding his internship, Metz states “Rural Reimagined will provide me with a unique learning opportunity, and I am excited to see what the summer holds working with this internship.” Parish adds “I am excited to work with RR to develop my PTC skills and make new connections!” Wolfersberger states “I am very grateful to RR for the opportunity to advance my PTC skills, and I’m looking forward to making an impact on our community.”

Spaces Available: Elinor Ross CDF Freedom School for Kids, June 9-July 20
A few spaces remain for children entering 1st-5th grade to register for the FREE, six-week Freedom School experience – a literacy and cultural enrichment program for kids qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
Hosted by the College of Education, kids will engage in a variety of hands-on learning activities in a wide range of subjects, plus interactive field trips and family/community events. Breakfast and lunch are served each day. This year each child will also receive a bike and safety gear.

Virtual reception for John Smith, Mentor of the Year Award
Join University Advancement in a virtual reception for John Smith, recipient of the 2021 CASE District III Mentor of the Year Award, on Wednesday, May 19 at 11 a.m. The CASE Mentor of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has made an impact on other advancement professionals through mentorship, and candidates are nominated by a mentee who has benefited directly from the personal and professional leadership of the mentor. Smith graduated from Tech with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in business administration. He has held progressively-responsible positions since beginning his work in University Advancement as a graduate assistant in the 90s. CITL 2021 Summer Intensive
The CITL Summer Intensive is a two-day workshop experience open to all Tennessee Tech faculty. Day one will consist of four morning sessions that will unpack the 6 categories of the OLC Course Design Rubric, a break for lunch, and then breakout rooms in the afternoon where you can work one-on-one with the CITL staff. Day two will be similar, but focusing on infusing technology into your courses to promote interaction and engagement. The afternoon session will be centered around implementation and sharing ideas.

Registration is open for the Elinor Ross CDF Freedom School – a free, six-week (June 9-July 20) literacy and cultural enrichment program for children K-4th/entering 1st-5th grades who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Community Spotlight: Treehouse Publishing Group in Jamestown, TN
Rural Reimagined recognizes Treehouse Publishing Group, a successful rural Tennessee business in Jamestown, for their work creating children’s books to assist and help fundraise created this program with her daughter when the Covid-19 pandemic first struck. AJ says, “I wanted to give back to the nonprofit organizations that do so much for our communities, animals and the planet.” AJ Wanegar, the founder of Treehouse Publishing Group, created this nonprofit with her daughter when the Covid-19 pandemic first struck. AJ, a long-time freelance illustrator, has overcome a history of trauma and injury and recognizes the role nonprofits played in her success.

TTU Miracle Raised $26,346 for Children’s Miracle Network
On Saturday, April 17, 2021, the TTU Miracle organization raised $26,346.21 for the Monroe Carnell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Three years ago, the organization committed to raising $100,000 for the hospital and they have now successfully completed this goal. There will officially be a “TTU Miracle Patient Room” on the cancer floor of the hospital. The Greek Life community on campus played a big part in the events and donations this year. Rachel Kurtsinger, President of TTU Miracle, describes how special the Dance Marathon event was this year. It was the first in-person big event Miracle has gotten to host since Homecoming 2018, so it was a great chance to reconnect Tech’s campus back to this cause. Rachel states, “Tech truly showed out this year and we are so very proud to lead them in this fight to change kids’ health- change their future. We can’t wait until next year! All For The Kids.”
