Dr. Jeannette Luna of the Department of Earth Sciences is the recipient of the 2020-2021 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Innovative Teaching. This award recognizes a recent significant innovation in undergraduate teaching. Dr. Luna is recognized for her use of Google Earth, Virtual Rocks and Mineral Sets in SketchFab, and ArcGIS Pro. Her curated collections of Google Earth assignments and SketchFab 3D renderings of rocks and minerals enabled courses in Earth Sciences to switch to online lab delivery during the pandemic.

Distinguished Service Learning Award Nominations
Each year, the Provost’s Office, along with the Service Learning Center, recognizes one student and one faculty member who have best demonstrated exceptional service learning and service leadership.

Spanish for Beginners- 100% Online Summer Course
Do you want the skills you will need to thrive in a global society? If you answered yes, you should learn Spanish at Tennessee Tech!
SPAN 1020-541 (3 credits) will be offered this summer.
Dates: SPAN 1020= 6/28/2021 – 7/30/2021
Meeting: 100% Online
We will learn basic vocabulary and grammar and continue to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to be able to communicate in the Spanish language. We will also identify common beliefs and cultural practices in the Spanish-speaking world. Course activities will consist of reading, videos, asynchronous conversations, grammar exercises, and quizzes.
Taking SPAN 1010 offered during the first summer term and this class will also fulfill foreign language requirements you may have for your BA degree!

Summer & Fall Bookorders due March 29th
Bookorders for Summer and Fall are needed by 3/29. Please submit your book orders as soon as possible. Students begin registering for classes on April 5th and when they register they should be able to see book requirements for their classes.
The Bookstore has a new order submission site, AIP (Adoption & Insight Portal). It can be found on your Tech Express. It is the a green box with a book icon and says “BN AIP”. Call for EDGE QEP course grant applications with important changes for 2021-2022
EDGE: Enhanced Discovery through Guided Exploration is TTU’s Quality Enhancement Plan. Since 2015, the EDGE Creative Inquiry Course Grant Program has offered Faculty the opportunity to redesign undergraduate courses to include creative inquiry projects and assignments. Starting fall, 2021, the program will be opened to graduate classes as well. Additionally, the EDGE rubric is now an optional method of assessing student work – faculty may propose another method for assessment. The limit on individual course grants is $5,000. The limit on multiple-course curriculum grants is $15,000. April 5 is the application deadline.

CISE Grant Applications Due Friday, March 26
Creative Inquiry Summer Experience (CISE) grant applications are due Friday, March 26. Grants are for a maximum of $4,000 with up to $3,500 as a paid stipend. Fidan receives Kinslow award for best published paper on 3D printing research
Ismail Fidan, Ph.D. was honored with the Kinslow Engineering Research Award from the College of Engineering for the best paper published in a refereed professional journal.
Fidan’s winning article on research into additive manufacturing – or 3D printing – was conducted through the Center for Manufacturing Research, which was established at Tech in 1985. The article on, was published– An International Journal, volume 202, which was released August 2020.

Ghafoor recognized for excellence with Brown-Henderson award
Tech Computer Science Professor Sheikh Ghafoor has received the Brown-Henderson Outstanding Engineering Faculty Award by the College of Engineering for his accomplishments in preparing students through innovative courses, service, and research accomplishments.
Ghafoor has developed impactful courses and steered curriculum, in addition to securing external funding for research totaling $7.7 million – with Tech’s portion almost $4.7 million – from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Energy, the National Security Agency, and other sources.
