  • Carrick Receives Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award

    Carrick Receives Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award

    Dr. Jesse Carrick has been named a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar. The award is based on accomplishment in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching, and provides an unrestricted research grant of $75,000. Carrick is one of only 8 nation-wide to receive this award. Nominees must be engaged in research and teaching primarily with undergraduates. Institutions may submit only one Henry Dreyfus nomination annually.

    Carrick’s research is entitled, “Synthetic Approaches to Minor Actinide Separations from Lanthanides Contained within Spent Nuclear Fuel.”

    The Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of the chemical sciences. Established in 1946 by chemist, inventor, and businessman Camille Dreyfus as a memorial to his brother Henry, the Foundation became a memorial to both men when Camille Dreyfus died in 1956. Throughout its history the Foundation has sought to take the lead in identifying and addressing needs and opportunities in the chemical sciences through a series of programs and awards.

    SciFinder To Be Retired on Dec. 31 – Transition Your Account to SciFinder-n

    Are you a SciFinder user with a current account? If so, it is time to transition to the new SciFinder-n interface!

    SciFinder/SciFinder Scholar/SciFinder Classic will be retired on December 31, 2022. Going forward, you must use the new interface called SciFinder-n. The good news is that your existing login for SciFinder will continue to work in SciFinder-n. However, if you have any saved answer sets or search alerts set up in your SciFinder/SciFinder Scholar/SciFinder Classic account, you must migrate them to SciFinder-n by December 31, 2022.   • Non-Instructional Faculty Assignment Submission 2022-2023

    Proposals from faculty are now being accepted for the 2022-2023 academic year for the Non-Instructional Faculty Assignments. The purposes of the non-instructional assignments are: to contribute to the professional growth of the faculty; to improve the teaching and the curriculum across the University; and/or to enhance the scholarship and academic excellence of the University in ways that cannot be accomplished under the constraints of the regular workload assignments. Submission deadlines: January 17, 2023 – Suggested deadline for proposals to department chairs; January 27, 2023 – Deadline for proposals to Academic Affairs.     Looking for an intense challenge? Register now for the Putnam Math Competition!

    Do you like math puzzles? Are you looking for a challenge of epic proportions? The Putnam Mathematical Competition is calling.
    The preeminent math competition for college students in North America, the Putnam Competition takes place on the first Saturday in December, and is given here on the Tennessee Tech campus. It consists of two 3-hour sessions, comprising a dozen supremely challenging problems, covering everything from algebra, geometry and calculus to number theory, linear algebra and methods of inductive proofs.
    These are no ordinary test questions, but a series of fiendishly constructed puzzles that call upon both your math knowledge and your problem-solving skills. Top performers receive scholarships, and all participants leave with the knowledge that they have scaled the Mount Everest of math.

    Dr. Rajabali’s Team to Build an Ion Beam Facility

    Associate Professor Dr. Mustafa Rajabali is building an ion beam laboratory on campus. By teaching a diverse group of students how to get information and direction from departments across campus, Dr. Rajabali and his team have saved countless dollars and gained valuable hands-on experience. The team’s projects are impressive in both scope and cost savings.

    The ion-beam facility is unique in that it involves only undergraduates in every aspect of its design, development and construction. It is envisioned to be a training ground for undergraduate science and engineering majors who intend to pursue a path in graduate studies or choose a career path in applied physics. The lab incorporates many fields in physics and engineering and is a critical part of a plan to develop a facility that will support a multitude of research projects including work related to Dr. Rajabali’s Department of Energy, Office of Science, Nuclear Physics Grant.

    The ingenuity and resourcefulness of Dr. Rajabali’s team has resulted in unique experiences for undergraduate students in acquiring knowledge, collaborating with other departments and facilities on campus, and in learning how build their own equipment. Invaluable lessons learned even before the lab and equipment contained within are fully functional. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!
