Tech Students and Faculty Explore Ghana, West Africa
In May, Tech students and faculty left on a study abroad program to Ghana, West Africa. Led by Dept. of Curriculum & Instruction’s Senior Lecturer Cale Koester and Associate Professor Dr. Queen Ogbomo, the participants were immersed in myriad opportunities for service learning and cultural studies.
The two-week excursion included working with a village school as observers then offered interactive lessons, reading activities, and presentations. Our students also provided the school’s library with reference and story books, assisted with their teaching lab, and band equipment repairs.
They also joined in studies at the Dagbe Cultural Institute & Arts Center, including education in drumming, dance, singing, kente weaving, basket making, local traditions, cuisine, social issues, and more.
“The students showed determination, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout this service-learning experience and we are proud of how they represented Tennessee Tech,” said Koester.

Project Request Deadline for the Office of Communications & Marketing
The Office of Communications and Marketing has set the project submission deadline as June 21, 2023. This applies to Web and Digital Media requests, Printing Services requests, Photo/Video Services requests and Creative Services requests. If you have projects that need to be paid for and completed before the end of fiscal year, please submit by June 21. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee the work will get completed in time to charge via IDT before the end of the fiscal year.

Tech Farm Produce
We have produce available for purchase from Oakley Farm! We currently have red tomatoes and cucumbers. Tomatoes are available at $1.50 per pound and cucumbers are $0.50 each. We also have bulk orders available for canning. Orders can be placed on Marketplace (Tennessee Tech Marketplace (tntech.edu)). All orders must be in by noon on Tuesdays for Thursday pickup.
Pickup will be in Oakley Hall 102.

Audit or Review Reports Received from External Agencies 6/23
To comply with State Audit directives and Tennessee Tech Policy #130, any audit or review reports received from external agencies should be forwarded to Internal Audit when they are received throughout the year. If you or your department have received any audit or review reports from external agencies during FY23 that have not already been forwarded to Internal Audit, please send them to Deanna Metts (dmetts@tntech.edu) at this time. As you receive reports in the future, please send them to the same address.

COVID Equipment Adjustments
As the COVID pandemic winds down, it’s time for TTU to adjust accordingly. Several countermeasures across campus are no longer necessary and need to be disposed of properly. This includes plexiglass barriers, Enviroklenz air purifiers, and foot-operated hand sanitizer stations. Over the course of this summer, Facilities personnel will support the campus by disposing of any undesired countermeasures, but we need your help.
Each department/building needs to determine which pieces are no longer desired, and with the help of the building coordinators, designate a room/space ALL these surplus pieces can be safely stored (fire code doesn’t allow these to be stored in hallways). Once the unwanted pieces are gathered, the building coordinator (or their designee) can submit a work request ( https://www.tntech.edu/facilities/forms.php ) for the Logistics department, who will remove the unwanted pieces from the storage location and properly dispose of them.
For those that choose to keep the Enviroklenz portable air purifiers (primarily located in classrooms, open offices, and common areas) for their departments use, TTU will provide you with spare HEPA filters before the end of the summer so you can continue to utilize the units for years to come (each HEPA filter is recommended for 2 years of use), we will also provide information related to the paper filters and UV light bulbs your department will also need to service these purifiers.

The College of Graduate Studies has an opening for an Academic Support Associate 5. Duties include evaluating, reviewing and implementing graduate student program of study substitutions, admission to candidacy, reinstatement, change of major, thesis/dissertation forms, and processing FAST Track requests. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of BANNER and be willing to learn other TTU software systems including Degree Works, Scribe and Coursedog. University Services Building North Parking Lot Closure

Tennessee Tech wins awards, presents research at Florida AI conference
Tennessee Tech’s Department of Computer Science collected awards and presented research papers at the 36th International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society conference.
Tech participants included computer science professors Doug Talbert and William (Bill) Eberle, master’s candidate Mateo Gannod and undergraduate students Kate Phillips, Matthew Beech and Ethan Owens.
“FLAIRS is a great conference for introducing students to AI research,” Talbert said.
Phillips received the Best Student Paper Award for her research paper titled “The Complexity/Accuracy Tradeoff and Group Bias in Machine Learning-Based Trauma Triage Models,” which she presented at the conference.
Eberle received the Douglas D. Dankel II Award for his leadership and support of FLAIRS since 2008.
Gannod presented his paper, “Semantic Segmentation with Multispectral Satellite Images of Waterfowl Habitat.”

CITL Summer Series: Week 1
The CITL will kick off the Summer Series on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 11 AM, as we begin reading Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning by Dr. Pooja Agarwhal and Patrice Bain. We will meet virtually on Tuesdays, wrapping up the series on August 8, 2023. Together, we will learn and discuss how to implement retrieval practice, spacing, interleaving, and feedback-driven metacognition into courses. Reading is NOT required to join in on the conversation, and all chapters are available online though the TnTech Library. This week we will discuss the introduction and chapter 1. Native Plant Sale Saturday June 10
The Bartoo Botanical Society (BBS) will be hosting a native plant sale on Saturday June 10 from 9-4. The Tennessee Tech Native Plant Garden was invited to be part of the annual Putnam County Clean Commission garden tour. As part of this event, we will be selling native plants, including perennials, shrubs, and seed packets. The Native Plant Garden is located between Pennebaker and Johnson Hall. We hope to see you there! Cash only. All purchases will support the BBS.

2024 Expanded Benefits
Benefits Administration is pleased to announce three expanded State Group Insurance Program benefits included in the approved state budget for 2024 as part of Governor Lee’s total compensation initiative. These benefit enhancements will begin in calendar year 2024. More details will be coming in September.
Here is a brief overview of these expanded benefits and how they impact you:
• The state will fund 50% of the dental insurance premiums.
• The state will cover 100% of the premiums for employee long-term disability insurance. Employees who use this benefit will receive 63% of their monthly salary (up to $10K per month) following a 90-day waiting period.
• The state will pay 100% of the premiums for employee basic term life/basic AD&D insurance. Designated beneficiaries will receive 1x the employee’s base annual salary rounded to the next highest thousand ($50K minimum except when reduced at age milestones/$250K maximum).Learn more about your ParTNers for Health employee benefits at www.tn.gov/partnersforhealth.html.
