Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Research at Mississippi State University
We’ll kick off the Spring 2021 semester of (virtual) Undergraduate STEM Research Seminars with a presentation describing research activities at Mississippi State University (MSU). Professors Lamiaa El Fassi and Dipangkar Dutta (Experimental Nuclear Physics) and Professors Donna Pierce and Angelle Tanner (Astronomy and Astrophysics) will join us to describe their research as well as the overall program at MSU, which includes astronomy, atomic, molecular, optical, and plasma physics, computational physics, condensed matter physics, and nuclear physics. These research activities include work in both physics and engineering, so this will be an opportunity to hear and ask questions about a wide assortment of exciting scientific work! The seminar will be this Friday, February 5th at 4pm. It is geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend. Recognizing and Responding to Human Trafficking
Guest speaker, Natalie Ivey, who is the Executive Director of the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking (CCAHT), will be giving a virtual presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 2 during dead hour (11 a.m. until noon). CCAHT is the only counter-trafficking organization in East TN that unites and equips our community to end human trafficking while providing survivors with comprehensive, trauma-informed aftercare services, including case management, safe shelter, food and clothing, transportation, therapeutic services and community resources.To access, go to the Center Stage Events page for the Zoom link. The day has finally come! Join Center Stage, the Women’s Center and Project Awaken TONIGHT (Feb. 1) for “An Evening with Alex Jenny, the Drag Therapist” at 6 P.M.!

Alex Jenny is a Chicago-based trauma therapist and drag queen known as The Drag Therapist. She is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in trauma recovery, identity development, gender affirming care, and changing our relationships to our younger selves. Her drag and art focuses on uplifting and celebrating trans people of color and more specifically trans women and trans feminine people of color. Most recently, she hosts a show called The Moment, part drag show, part talk show, that celebrates trans artists. She has been engaged in community organizing, activism, and social justice education for over a decade. We hope you will join us as we learn from Alex about her life, her work and her passions!

Alpha Phi Omega Spring Recruitment — First Info Meeting
Alpha Phi Omega at Tennessee Tech is starting its spring recruitment next week. We are currently an extension group looking to obtain our charter and are looking for any student interested in community service opportunities and developing leadership skills to join as charter members. Alpha Phi Omega is the largest, co-educational intercollegiate service organization in the United States, with international chapters in the Philippines and Canada, and over 500,000 members since 1925. Some of the projects that the group has done sin the past year includes a tornado relief drive, card-making for senior citizens and first responders, and a blood drive in November collecting almost 50 pints of blood for the local community.
We will be meeting on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00 pm in the new Laboratory Science Commons, room 1201 (to the right of Einstein Bagels as you enter the building from the front). The meeting will also be available on Zoom if that is more convenient for some people:

First Meeting for the “Know My Name” Book Club
Looking to connect with other students? Join book club! This term’s read is Know My Name by Chanel Miller, an immersive memoir of Miller’s highly publicized sexual assault by Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner, the high-profile court case, and its aftermath. All students are welcome to attend this book club sponsored by the Women’s Center, PEP & Project Awaken.

Avant-Garde (TTU’s French Club) will meet on Thursday, February 4 at dead hour (11-12) in Oakley 219. We’ll decide on activities for the semester, at a safe, social distance. Join the Center for Career Development on Tuesday, Feb. 2, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Roaden University Center Multipurpose Room (2nd floor) for this Purple Career Readiness Workshop. You only have one chance to make a great first impression – learn how to sell yourself when meeting with employers virtually from Erin Bullington, Assistant Director of the Center for Career Development!
This event is open to all students in all majors and counts towards the Purple Career Readiness Certificate for junior and senior students. Bring your Eagle Card for a quick sign-in.
