Group Work Part 1
Student engagement and community are characteristics of a quality course regardless of the modality. While poorly structured group projects can lead to frustrations and stifle motivation for students, well-organized projects can pull students together as a team allowing them to learn from each other by sharing perspectives, mindsets, cultural expectations, and ideas. Join us for part 1 of this two-part series and learn how to successfully plan and utilize group work in your courses, as well as have a chance to hear from a student’s perspective.

CAFÉ Conversations: President’s Cabinet Series
Join us on October 20th at 3 PM in Derryberry Room 200 for our next CAFÉ Conversations session with Dr. Cynthia Polk-Johnson, Vice President for Student Affairs. During this session, Dr. Polk-Johnson and members of the Division of Student Affairs will provide an overview of their area and current resources and activities that promote student and faculty success. The conversation will also serve as an opportunity to engage with faculty on how they can partner with Student Affairs for overall student success.

RHA Dodgeball Tournament
Lace-up your athletic shoes and get ready for a battle of the residence halls! Join the Residence Hall Association and Tech Wars for a dodgeball tournament this Saturday, October 16th, from 1-3pm in the Burn MAC Gym! There will be a competitive and casual league tournament to earn Tech Wars points for your hall. One team per reshall for each tournament will be allowed. Each team should pick a theme they will be representing such as Harry Potter or cartoon characters. Team registration ends October 15th at 11:59pm. Upcoming ARA Meeting: Addiction and Recovery Awareness @ 11am on October 19th via Zoom
The Addiction and Recovery Awareness @ TN Tech (ARA) is a student-driven organization aimed at raising awareness of the use, abuse, and dependency of addictive substances and seeks to educate the community and provide resources and support for those in recovery through a variety of activities and peer support. The ARA Invites you to get involved in planning and promoting activities, educating the campus, and providing support for the TN Tech community. The second meeting of ARA is scheduled for 11:00am on Tuesday, October 19 via Zoom. There was a great turnout at the first meeting, and ARA would love to grow in membership. Join the Center for Career Development on Thursday, Oct. 14, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the Roaden University Center Multipurpose Room (2nd floor) for this Purple Financial Planning workshop. This workshop will feature Harrison Myers from Northwestern Mutual, who will provide insight regarding how to plan a successful budget while starting your career!
This event is open to all students in all majors and counts toward Part Two of the Purple Career Readiness application for junior and senior students. Bring your Eagle Card for a quick sign-in.

Traffic/Road Changes on Saturday, October 16 on Dixie Avenue
On Saturday, October 16, the Haunted Half Marathon will start and finish on campus. Traffic will be briefly affected the morning of the race in order to provide a safe race route. Vehicles exiting residence halls on the east side of campus will NOT be able to use Dixie Avenue and must exit through 9th Street only from 5 a.m. to approximately 11 a.m. The campus community is advised to avoid Dixie Avenue north of 7th Street the morning of October 16 if at all possible. Student residents are also advised that the start of the race will be signaled by ROTC firing the cannon at 7 a.m. Please contact University Police at 372-3234 with questions.

Claire Stinson, vice president, Division of Planning and FinanceThe 2020-2021 Wings Up 100 roster is an elite group of 38 Tech researchers who brought in at least $100,000 in external funding for their research and activities during 2020-2021.
Congratulations to these researchers who helped Tech set a new high in external funding.

Join us on Monday, October 18th at 3 pm in Derryberry Hall 200 to learn about best practices for creating inclusive teaching environments and practical ways to make your classrooms more accessible with the use of instructional technology resources.

You are invited to attend an informational session on the Campus Master Plan update. The Master Plan guides the university’s construction and facilities. Garry Askew with Bauer Askew Architecture will be on campus Thursday October 21st 1:30-3:00 in Jere Whitson Auditorium and again on Tuesday November 16th 10:00-11:30 in Jere Whitson Auditorium to provide information.

Attend this Co-op Meetup on Thursday, Oct. 14, in Clement Hall 212 at 11 a.m. Any student interested in accepting a Cooperative Education position with an employer MUST attend a Co-op Meetup.
The Co-op Meetup will explain the eligibility guidelines for enrolling in the Cooperative Education Program, which went into effect July 1, 2019 for all students. Pre-registration to enroll in the Co-op Program is now required and attending a Co-op Meetup is your first step! ALICE Fall Hike and Lunch
All Ladies in Civil Engineering (ALICE) will be hosting a Fall Hike and Group Lunch at Bee Rock on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10:00 am. All ladies who are majoring in Civil Engineering or who would like to major in Civil Engineering are welcome to attend. We will be carpooling, so please meet at the gravel parking lot across from Sherlock Park at 9:30 am. A group lunch will follow where everyone can mingle and get to know one another. ALICE will not be covering lunch so please bring money.

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this week: Emma Mitchell, TTU Physics
This week in the Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar, physics major Emma Mitchell will give a talk on Light Attenuation in Scintillators. Emma will describe her work over the summer developing an experimental setup to characterize long-term changes in the light collection efficiency of a plastic scintillator. The seminar will be this Friday, October 15th at 4pm in Volpe Library 248. It will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend! Creepy Crawly STEM Fab Friday (3rd-8th Grade)
Join us for Creepy Crawly STEM Fab Friday (3rd-8th Grade) at the Oakley STEM Center on Friday, October 15, 2021, from 5:00-8:00 PM.
What was that shadow on the floor? Did you hear a knocking on the door? Was that a chill down your back? This STEM night fun is right on track!
STEM Fab Friday events are focused on getting families and their children engaged in STEM activities. There are two regularly scheduled events each semester held on Fridays from 5-8 pm. We look forward to having families enjoy time together while exploring new STEM concepts through hands-on activities.
A parent or guardian is expected to attend with the student(s). Students may not be left unattended.
Masks are required to attend this event as per Tennessee Tech University Policy. This event is spread out over a longer period of time and will have fewer stations than previous events in an effort to allow for some distancing.
Hand sanitizer will be available at all stations and items will be wiped after each use by volunteers.
